grungefreek
This is the topic i posted on another plant forum, though i woudl post it here as well and see how i go. Hi Aussie Planted tank peoples, Ok i need to know what lights u guys are using, where u got them from and how expensive they were. Im getting some good advice from Americans on the site, but ofcourse what they can get, isnt what we can get. Ok so heres the lighting i would like advice on if u have used it. Normal Fluoro's - What bulbs u have tried - How u hooked them up, using a ballast or just buying normal lighting. Over driven Fluoro's - See other post CF's - Ok well i can buy them complete here but $$$$$$$$$ - So anyone done any DIY CF's??? - I cant seem to find end caps or ballasts or anything, just the bulbs T5's - also other post Ok so surely some Aussies have tried some of the methods above. If u have imported any lighting as well, i would be interested in finding out how u went about it, where from, costs (rough estimates) etc etc. Thanx Guys (from a person going insane trying to figure out how to light his new tank
Davo
If you are intersted in compact fluoro's, take a look at the post i did at Boronia Aquarium. It is in the "Underwater Garden" forum and is on page 14, titled "Compact Fluoro's - Great Price". I installed 6 x 55w CF over my 4x2x2 tank and they are great. If you need any more info, Pm me or email me at bograttus@ozemail.com.au. You can get the bulbs, end caps and the ballast over here. I am also about to order some bulbs from the US that are allegedly the best for planted tanks (GE 9325k). PS. Did I PM you on the other site? Dave. Mosman. mtchye
Hi, Metal halides are probably the best bang for your buck if you can build a tall hood or do a roof mount.. Ideal if you need tonnes of light. I've done DIY compact fluoros. You get the fittings from a lighting wholesaler, the ballast, starter etc are the same as for normal T8's. You can use compact fluoros with either the standard magnetic or electronic ballasts. Here is mine: http://www.perthcichlid.com/forums/viewtop...=compact+fluoro This place sells Metal halides and you can specify daylight globes. Cheapest i've seen: http://www.ndlight.com.au/shop/prod_show.php?art_no=SMR150 HTH Vincent
TSMill
Hi Vincent.....would just note that daylight generally covers 4000-6000K; if you ask for daylight without specifying Kelvin rating you tend to get 4200K.
grungefreek
Hmm ok, so ballasts and end caps for CF's are available over here. Do u think Bunnings might stock them?? I dont live in a big city, so the closest place that might have them is bunnings (still 2hrs drive), otherwise, i may have to wait till i get back down to Newcastle to find them. Those MH's are pretty cheap, but i wont have a hood big enough for them unfortunately. Davo, i guessed u were Aussie Tanker on the other forums, no u havent replied there, but just reply here, more aussies will benefit that way.
