Tropheops macrothalmus "Chitimba"?

I bought a bag at the auction under the assumption that the person got the name wrong and the fish are supposed to be "Chitande" and not "Chitimba".

There is a Chitimba variant, but I don't think it's in Australia.

Can someone confirm or deny this?

I'm assuming (and hoping) that what I bought were Chitande, to go along with the 5 I already have. They look the same as 4cm fish, but I'd like to be sure, obviously.

Also, if the Chitimba is indeed here, can someone tell me what they look like as fry? I'm guessing they look almost the same as Chitande (pale yellow)?

Yeah look on page 80 and 81 as well.

I need to know exactly which ones are here. The Tropheops sp. "Chitimba" and the Tropheops macrothalmus "Chitimba" are different fish. The ones I have were labeled Tropheops macrothalmus "Chitande" and Tropheops macrothalmus "Chitimba" respectively.

The auctioneers made the statement last night that the Chitimbas for sale in the bag were the yellow variant of the tropheops, which encouraged me to buy them. If indeed they are a true Chitimba (where the male is blue), then I'm not going to be very happy as I'll have two variants, and will have to sell one lot and find others of the second lot to add to the colony. mad.gif

Hi Andy,

I think what you have is Tropheops macrophthamus from Chitande Is.

Im very certain that Tommo from Wollongong was selling these from memory. I would be ringing Anthony at Auburn Aquarium he will be able to tell you from the data base. If not ring the Gong Committee to see if they have Tommo's number and talk directly to him.

The other varient is here also.

Thanks Brett.

I'll do that. Hopefully you are right and I now have a nice little colony of Chitande, and not 5 chitande and 5 chitimba.

If anyone knows who sold lots 873 and 903, I'd love to hear from you by email or PM.

I got both bags of the Chinyankwazi on the day sorry. I also have the Tropheops Macrothalmus "Chitimba" at home that were from the Wollongong Auction. At this stage I am still waiting to see long term what they turn out like but have resolved myself that the males will be orange. From what I can find out in an Ad Konnings book I was reading there are two variants at Chitimba Bay. One is your common orange/ yellow type but also at a depth of 22 metres there is another type were the older males turn blue with black barring and a bit of yellow on the head. Ad wrote he also saw territorial males at this depth that were still outright orange or the female colour. There is nothing I have seen to determine which location we have so I made enquiries to the breeder and it appears that they are the orange upper level types at Chitimba Bay which get a bit of blue through the fins only.

No probs.

Thanks guys (and especially Brett).

Luckily I put them in separate tanks when I got back just in case.

Looks like I'll be selling off the Chitimba and trying to source some Chitande. rolleyes.gif
