Ant
Might sound like a stupid question but is he getting enough vegie food? They could be getting stuck into other foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworm and not getting enough vegie...just an idea, i know mine get them selves pretty bloated on brine shrimp at times, i just make sure they get there daily veg. ViS
Are you sure it's bloat or is it just fat? Does it roll around off balance and look sick or does it just have a huge round fat belly? If it's the latter, cut down on the food amounts. Anita had a pleco that was so fat that its tail almost stuck out at 45 degrees when it was attached to the glass! johnwilly1000
i think u guys r right i only feed my other fishes bloodworm and hardly ever feed pleco vegies. i try not to feed them from now on so its stomach will go down hopefully, its kinda bloated and looks yuk he still runs around looking for food though. because im thinking if it were fat then wouldn't it shrink by now? should i try and not feed him altogether. or should i go get some pleco food to feed them, im really worried about feeding them though cause they might get more bloated. i got 2 plecos, ones fine the other is bloated
ViS
If he is not showing signs of being sick, I doubt it's bloat. I'd say he is just very good at finding any uneaten food. You should definitely add a couple of spirulina discs every few days to give them the vegetable matter they need. I've never specifically fed a pleco. They do a fantastic job at scavenging what other fish don't eat. Just pretend he is not there when feeding the others and just feed them what you normally would. If he gets too skinny over time, then increase the food portions, but if he still maintains a healthy weight, don't put food in there specifically for him. johnwilly1000
i havent fed him anything for days though. shouldn't the stomach go down by now. how long after he gets fat until his stomach shrinks to normal. if it were fat shouldn't both plecos be fat and not just
Ducksta
He is eating what you feed your other fish. Are you saying you havent fed anything in that tank for a few days? They will be hungry If the fish is behaving normally, as Andy has said, there isn't much to worry about. Unless it loses control of its movement and starts presenting other symptoms just continue as normal. You should see the bellies on my Synodontis njassae when I feed them up good on frozen stuff
johnwilly1000
no i feed the other fish, but just not them, his belly is popping out and balance isn't good. if he were to have bloat usually how long until he will die? I just went and bought some octazin tablets and plan on curing him seperately in a bucket with heater and airstone. but i really need to know if its bloat hey cause its still alive
johnwilly1000
i used octazin at 10Litre of tank water, added some extra new water 2litre. making total about 12L. put in tablet and half hour later it died i think the dose was too strong for amount of water, i didn't neutralise the extra 2Litre as well. o well
Alan
There is every chance that your pleco sucumed to a case of wrong diet and octazin would have been no help at all. Plecos are absolute pigs at tucker time and eat anything, even if it is no good for them. In reality most pleco species should not be kept with fish fed a high proetine diet, specially if they are well/over fed. Plecos need a very different diet, they have a vary long gut, and too much fast digesting food is fatal. Alan
johnwilly1000
yeah i guessed so, i never did care for pleco, cause people told me in my 8ft that he'll just clean everything so i thought he'll be fine. he ate constantly bloodworms. do u guys think i should have left it alone or reduce the dosage of octazin?
