Even large adult peps and a small cucumber. Theyd be eating 4x their bodyweight at least, which is way too much I think. Is there heaps of fry in there? Or other fish eating the cucumber? As 1 cucumber per night seems a hell of alot to me for 3 small fish.

As for changing up the diet. Try pumpkin, spinich and algae wafers alternate nights to the cucumber.

If all the 'Cue" is gone by morning then, obviously some one in the tank is enjoying midnight snacks. I would have thought that a whole 'Cue' more than enough for three peppermints so there has to be others helping them.

Mix up the diet a bit. Peppermints are not totally vegetarian, they like a little 'meat' with their veg.

Thanks for the replies guys,

Ducksta: The male is guarding a new batch of eggs but besides that no other fry or fish are in the tank. The peps are about 12-16cm. How much and what do you usually feed yours Ducksta?

Mix up the diet a bit. Peppermints are not totally vegetarian, they like a little 'meat' with their veg.

Alan: Thanks for the advice, last night i tried feeding them some sinking high protien pellets and they went in like 5 minutes! ohmy.gif . I didnt know if i should feed them more, should i have?

Guys another question; At the moment the males guarding some eggs and the two other females just hang outside his log and bash each other up. Oneo f the female has some torn fins, have you ever experienced this?

cheers

Yes,,,,Ansistrus are harem spawners and a male will spawn with as many ripe females that care to go into his lair. some times over several days.

With common bristle nose the most females I have had spawn with on male is 9 at one time over three days. A huge number of eggs so just as well he was a MONSTER male.

The ripe females will hassel each other for his attention.

Alan.

PS. just make sure there is veg available as well as a few pellets. Seeing as they are breeding you are doing OK.

Hi Richard ,

One rule I try to not bend to much with my fishkeeping is if it ain't broke don't fix it .Sounds like your starting a good run I,d stick with your feeding(conditioning) regime if it's working.Although like Alan says abit of protien wouldn't go astray.

Regards Chris

Richard,

What was the outcome of that spawn ??? Any little pepps swimming around ??

There have not been too many successful spawns of late...With this dry weather and poor water, eggs have been failing and fry not surviving for no obvious reason.

Breeders who were successful in the past are not doing too well this year even with proven brood stock.

Hope you might have had some luck.

Alan,

As far as I know Richard has sold the fry from his first spawn and has another larger one on the way, at elast he did last time I spoke to him. I will tell him to get on here and update you all thumb.gif
