YeW
Not sure - sounds like it may be a hybrid (not sure if they are). If so, hybrids are bad for the cichlid hobby. If not - then maybe it is a different Heros spp. There are quite a few , however, to my knowledge Heros has only one representative in Aust. ie: severums (whatever species they may be).. discusdude
There seems to be quite a lot of confusion about severums and the Heros genus. Although it would seem that we, here in Oz have got Heros severus, the fact of the matter is that the true Heros severus is actually a mouthbrooder, which means we do not have heros severus. The other options are Heros appendiculatus or Heros effasciatus, both of which have various localities. Some say that effasciatus is a varient of appendiculatus. Also as you can see in that picture of the "red head" severum, it has 3 vertical stipes, I have only seen a few severums like this, the others all have complete vertical barring. All Heros appendiculatus should have these bars: The most likely chance is that all severums in Oz are hybrids. What leads me to beleive this is that there is no consistency in the severums that you see around. Some have heavy facial markings, other have these vertical stripes, some have neither of these traits. Anther marking some have and others do not are two dots at the base of the tail. On at the top and the other at the bottom. You can see them on the picture above. Another "appendiculatus" Cheers Alistair
discusdude
If so, hybrids are bad for the cichlid hobby. No offence, but i think thats a gross generalization. I am sure hybrids get a lot of ppl into fish. However i think its best not to go there
YeW
Alistair - Having seen the fish I agree it is probably not a hybrid. As for our severums I definately agree with you, it is a sad fact that they are likely to be hybrids (at the very least intraspecific mixes). I don't agree with you on my "gross generalisation" which I think is neither gross nor generalised, however, you know my opinions on the matter. No offence either - if you want to email me an example where hybrid cichlids are good for the cichlid hobby I'd love to hear about it.
