my questions is, what is the best method for water changes. should i stick to thge one iam doing now or start doing the new one.

G'day mate,

I think giving the gravel a vacuum every week is a great routine to be in. As far as your water changes are concerned you could use Nitrate levels as an indicator. If your Nitrate levels are creeping up, increase the % of water you change, not too much at a time though. If your Nitrate levels are low (25ppm or lower) keep it as is. It depends also on the type of fish you keep, their size, their messiness, stock numbers and amount of food you feed. The size tank you keep can also be a factor. I have 25 Tropheus in a 470 litre tank and I do weekly 50% water changes and also vacuum weekly.

To keep it simple though, weekly water changes and weekly vacuuming should ensure your fish are happy little campers for many years to come.

Sorry if I was a jibberer,

Jamie.

I'm with him ^^.

25% once a week with a quick gravel vac when the water is emptied seems to be a routine that leads to healthy fish in my experience. I am sure others might do it less often but for me it works so I am less inclined to change. I have missed changes when I go away every now and then 2-3 weeks but I have not had any problems with the occassional longer change but when I get back and do a water change the fish seem to be happy and all shimmering, shaking and displaying their colours so I guess it's all good.
