fishinboots
Basically ever since I got my fluval 303 it's rattled. I don't know if they are meant to be quiet or anything but my one rattles (ebay 2nd hand job). Would anyone know how to fix it or should I just buy a new filter? Got any suggestions on a nice, quiet filter!? I think I've put up with it for too long.

Willy Wombat
I feel your pain fishinboots. My 404 is also noisy, and in my bed room. I have built a "box of silence" that it sits in to dampen out the noise, and stuffed the box full of old clothes. I can still hear it but it is a bit better. foai
In the last month I bought an Eheim 2217 at Trans in Canley Vale for about $220. Given that the performance and quality is so superior I get confused as to why people try to save $100 and buy an inferior product. I don't mean that in a derogatory sense because there will be times when money is tight etc but if you get 5 good years out of an eheim that is $45 per annum from a product that is absolutely essential to having happy and healthy fish. Therefore bite the bullet and splash out on an eheim. David
rick
What sort of rattling noise is it? Is it some air caugth in the impeller? I have had my Fluval 204 for nearly 10 years now and the only noise I hear from it is if there is some air in the impeller. To remove air in the impeller, I usually either tip the filter upside down while it is running or hold it on an angle for a minute or two. This usually gets rid of the trapped air and the filter runs as smooth as silk. In fact, I have had less problems with my 204 than I have had with my Eheim 2227, which has cost me nearly as much as the original purchase price in spare parts. Both filters are nearing 10 years old and still going strong so I shouldn't complain too much Rick
Mazimbwe
I have an old 303 that is as reliable as anything else, quiet too. Have you tried changing the impeller? If it is Air... I can't remember, and don't wanna pull mine apart(sorry), if the 303's have the same air-clearing system as the Eheim-classics but...if they do there will be a small hole next to the impeller-hole which can become blocked over time. It is essential that this is cleared as it allows air, trapped in the impeller, to be flushed.
fishinboots
It does sound like the empeller, you can get a replacement for it? I have the money to get a new one, I think I might.
Dark Morelia
Look at it this way: It's most likely either air in it, or the impeller. (Although it might be something else) Try the air first. Before you try anything though, pull it apart and give it a complete clean-out, making sure all the holes are un-clogged, and it's sparkling all over in general. Be absolutely sure there's no crap in the impeller well. bottle-brush-cleaner-things are good for that. Also check the holes at the ends of the impeller, they should be perfectly (or very nearly) round. If they're a bit oblongish, that's probably your problem. Now, for air pockets... Slowly rock the filter from side to side (while running) and you might hear a great whooshing noise as the impeller gets hold of the air pocket and pushes it out. Repeat until there's no air left. May also help if you turn it upside-down, or rock it a bit more violently. If this doesn't help, it's probably either your impeller or the shaft it goes on, so check both VERY carefully for wear, and get new ones if deemed necessary. I had the exact same problem with 2 Via Aqua canisters i bought 2nd hand off the forum. I asked if they worked, and all that stuff, but not if they were noisy and positioned 5ft from my bed, they were unbearable. Got new impellers for $16 and they're now silent. Not everyone has $100 to throw around ! Considering that the impeller is the commonest thing to go wrong with them, i reckon you're better off getting a cheaper one and buying a spare impeller at the same time. I've bought my fair share of "Good" brand things that have died sooner than my cheapies. Cheers, Andy
fishinboots
thanks for all your help! I went fiddling and unscrewed the plastic covering of the empeller (inside it's some kind of hard plastic sealing it away anyway) and it basically got rid of the 'rattling' and reduced the sound (I bet a new empeller would totally fix the job). Something I still wouldn't sleep with but luckily the tank is in the loungeroom
