Fiona,

I am sure this Ulcerated-sore issue has come up B4.

Have you tried a serch for ulcer with the forums Serch feature?

I wish I could remember what the outcome was...When I get back on tomorrow, I will see if you still need an answer and dig one outta my fish disease booklet for ya.

Yes I know it has come up before but it was a while ago, a year or 2. I've been looking but not found anything on the old forum. Maybe not looking with the right keywords? Or maybe it was so long ago it dropped off the end?

I wish I could remember more about that discussion. I think it did come up in other species than yellows, and that it seemed to be on just one side, by my fish it would be the right side. That's all I can remember.

Hi guys

I think the consensus was last time that it might be treatable with metronidazole. Metro treats a broad spectrum of gram negative anaerobic bacteria which are the main type of bacteria found in tropical fish. Another option might be a broad spectrum one like lincospectin. Of course isolate the affected fishes as soon as possible too.

I guess all you can do now is either give it a go or try to get a diagnosis from a vet.

I had an electric yellow die today as well, he was only small.. about 3-4cm..

HE would just stay on his side and GASP for air.. then when i went to catch him he would swim of and pretend to be healthy, then id leave him and same thing, breathing franticly and gasping for air, although the tank was overflowing with air..

Anything you guys could suggest as cause of death would be appreciated..

Something to do with the gills most likely, can be parasites or water conditions or other reasons, many things really. If the gills are injured they can't breathe properly even if the tank has heaps of oxygen. I've had white spot do that, can't see the spots but they are on the gills, treat for white spot and it clears up. Not that I'm saying yours is white spot, just that it can be something you don't think of.
