julesjb
Hi all, I am after some opinions on the best aquarium in Melbourne, having found a couple of 'new' ones the other weekend I am hoping to unearth a gem I havent yet found. So far St Kilda would have to be the best - in terms of quality of fish etc - with Boronia a close second in terms of range and prices. Any additions? Sarah
Good luck Jules on your search , i found the LFS here nothing like the ones in Sydney. There are a few that are pretty good but the rest well you need to see them for yourself, but one store i went to didnt even have any tank lights on and the shop was dark , maybe due to the fact most of his tanks were in desperate need of a clean and some of his fish looked rather poor . I was the only one in the store to and this was on the weekend. cheers Sarah
oracle
I am going to Melbourne in 3 weeks so would be interested to know the details of the aquariums that are worth going. If anyone else has time to show me their fish rooms when I am there, that will also be much appreciated.

mysteriousredsuns
the one in mulgrave is all aquarium and is run by someone who everyone seems to know, Heinz. its in a place called dunoon shopping centre in dunoon crt. i have found that this is my personal favourite. its amazing how many tanks there is, well over 100 i think and you can actualy see the babies growing up. also has some rarer fish and has that siamese fish (not a fighter, a joined fish) at the front. clint8
Another good one is definetely Subscape Aquarium. Nice display tanks and competitive prices. Cheers, Clint
Sarah
Another good one is Aquatic Escape in Maidstone 80 Hampstead Rd ,only discovered it the other week it has a good selection of cichlids . cheers Sarah
abob
I like Subscape too (Victoria Street, Richmond). They are in to earth-eaters and catfish amongst other things. St. Kilda has probably the best quality fish but the staff always seem too busy to help for more than netting fish.
julesjb
Yeah St Kilda has the best quality fish by an absolute mile. I would be hesitant in recommending Mulgrave - Heinz does know his stuff (and certainly has strong opinions) but some of the stuff there is absolute rubbish. Any aquarium that keeps a siamese fish (ie two fish joined together) as an oddity is a little bit strange. A case in point: A couple of years ago I bought four fryeris from Heinz - one turned out to be something else entirely - I think some sort of hybrid. I bought a beautiful coloured up male fryeri yesterday from St Kilda - I have never seen such great fryeris in melbourne before - there are still a couple left! After many years I have decided that if I am going to buy fish (ie not swap them or buy them from a breeder) I would rather pay more for quality... Whats 10$ more for a healthy fish that will keep you entertained for five or six years? Jules
