rick
Hi all, I was down at the LFS on the weekend looking for some tank mates for my saulosi and they had the above fish in a tank there. The juvs were brown/grey in colour with vertical (I think they were vertical, but can't be sure) stripes. They weren't able to show me what they looked like full grown so I had a search on the net but couldn't come up with anything. Does anyone know what these guys might be or what other names they may go under? TIA Rick
Ducksta
Are you sure they weren't "Hongi" Have a search with that location. There are pictures of these fish everywhere! When a species name is given, it is generally as Genus species "Location". To my knowledge, and according to this map I have, there is no location "Hawaii" in Lake Malawi. rick
Are you sure they weren't "Hongi" Have a search with that location. There are pictures of these fish everywhere! No, definitely not the same as the "Hongi". In fact, they were in tanks next to each other and the hongi were much lighter in colour with some orange starting to show though on the fins. I might have to go out and refresh my memory on exactly what they look like or get a couple of pics ... Rick
Ducksta
Since there are "hongi" in the tank next to them, have a close look, if the backing/gravel in the tanks are different colours then they may well be the same fish showing slightly different colour to avoid predation etc better. I keep my hongi fry in a range of conditions and get incredible variences in colour, but ultimately when I put them all in the same tank, they all find the best shade for that tank and stick to it. I would be very skeptical buying an African fish with the location given as a North American Island After having a quick flick through my Ad Konings Malawi book, I didn't see anything close to Labidochromis sp "Hawaii"
Canberra Alex
Hi rick i think i know the LFS and i have asked them the same questions i have come to the conclusion that they are hybrids of some sort hongie cross ?something? i could be wrong tho i cant find any pics
rick
I dropped into the LFS again to ahve another look and these "hawaii" Labs are similar to the "hongi". The "hongi" they had were a bit lighter and had a more yellow colour on the fins, while the "hawaii" were dark blue with orange showing on the fins. In another tank that was labelled "Maingano" there appeared to be a mixture of the "hawaii" and "hongi" but this could just be the same species show some slight colour variation. Either way, I don't think I will be buying any of these .... Rick
