My Tank

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I thought I would put up a pic of my tank as my first pic post here. It has changed a little since the weekend as I have removed the fry and the rocks are aranged slightly differently.

user posted image

Tank details:

3ft, 38 gal (140L)

Eheim 2227

Fluval 204

Rocks from the local area

Currently houses 4 Ps. saulosi and 3 Bristlenose cats

Photo details:

Canon 300D Digital SLR

28-105 f3.5-4.5 USM II Lens

Tripod shot without flash

1/3 sec, f3.5, ISO100

I like the effect of a long exposure for a whole tank shot. Unfortunately, these guys move a little fast and end up rather blurred. If I had a bit more time I would take several more shots and pick one with a bit less movement.

wish i could get hold of some fry down here in vic

Contact Blair (Frank'n'Beans) or Arj (Chilli Powder) and they should be able to hook you up with some nice fry. Blair has the best bloodline in Australia (or at least did a while back). Not sure if he still keeps them, but I hope he does.

Nice tank.

How much did you pay for the 300D and what do you think of it? I've been considering getting one.......

I got the 300D from Hardly Normal for $1789. I then got $200 back from Canon Australia so I actually paid $1589 (6mths interest free allowed me to have it a bit earlier than expected as well smile.gif ). Canon Australia are giving the $200 to anyone who buys from an official retailer, however, some retailers don't advertise this fact. I am pretty sure the cash back offer is still valid.

You can get the camera cheaper from some of the ebay shops (around $1400), but you have to be careful. Some of the cameras come in from overseas and you may get hit with an import duty, depending on how it is packaged and whether customs think it is a retail purchase from OS or just a gift. Some online retailers advertise they will mark the merchandise as a gift, but I wouldn't rely on that to get you out of paying. I have had some rather sucessful purchases from ebay, including my 28-105 f3.5-4.5 lens, which is no longer available retail in Australia and is much better than the 28-105 that is available. If anyone wants some hints on buying camera equipment online, drop me a PM.

Oh, forgot to add my thoughts ... well, having used a PnS and now a DSLR, I am wishing I had just gone straight to the DSLR. The flexibilty of a DSLR allows me to take some awesome shot straight out of the box. Also I have learnt as much about photography in the last 2 months as I had in 5 years using a film SLR. The instant feedback from the DSLR is invaluable.

As for the 300D as a DSLR, I really like it, but if I had some more money I would have bought a 10D instead. With the 20D out now that is looking like a really good camera as well. My father-in-law has the Nikon D70 and while it is technically a better camera, I like the larger range of reasonably priced lenses that Canon have. One thing to consider when buying an SLR, be it digital or film, is that the cost of the camera is small in comparison to what you will spend on lenses and accessories over the years.

One of the things I did notice when I got my 300D is that the image quality with the 300D is very dependent on the lens you use. I have both the EFS 18-55 (comes with the 300D) and a EF 28-105 (semi professional quality lens) and there is a noticable difference in clarity and resolution between the two lenses. If you put on a professional lens such as a 24-70 f2.8L you will notice even more difference in the clarity.

I hope I have answered some of your questions. If you have any more specific questions ask away and I will do my best to answer them. I did a fair amount of research on this purchase to try and convince my wife that it was worth the money. Now I am having a hard time prying the camera out of her hands smile.gif

Considering... Saving... Geeze, by the time I save for the camera I like now, it will be obselete and I'll be targetting a better one.

My advice for people looking at cameras, is if you don't want to outlay a reasonable amount of cash to get a decent camera, just skip the purchase altogether. You get what you pay for!! dry.gif

That is exactly why I went for the no-deposit, 6 months interest free option woot.gif
