GT or JD .... That is the question.

Firemouth

Recommended Posts

G'day all,

I've a got a 3' display tank that I plan to put a solitary cichlid in with a few silver dollars.

i'd like the fish to be large-ish and colourful.

I'm thinking either male Rivulatus or Jack Dempsey.

Leaning toward the GT due to what I perceive as a less retiring nature.

The last Jack I owned while well marked was at times flighty.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

1. For the safety of the dollars.

2. GTs over JDs or vice versa.

3. Another Sth American that may fit the bill.

thanks In advance.

Aye, Super Green Texas. :) A variety of Green Texas (Herichthys carpintis). Usually H. carpintis var. Vontehillo or H. carpintis var. Escondido (as above). They're really, really beautiful.

Believe it or not I found some today.

2 fish with largest being maybe 15mm ..... $110 each.

Nearly fell over.

Also found a 7-8" GT for $80.

Elliottis for $25.

Decisions, decisions.

Paky pets is worth a poke around.

Not bad variety at all.

Of those, I would go for the Elliotis. Sure they're all pretty much defective, but they look beautiful nonetheless. Never been a fan of GTs, can't really keep the numbers I'd like without major issues. Never been a fan of EBJDs either. Their color is nice, but once grown their head looks weird and the chance of them dying is so high. Especially at that size.

Defective?

My brother said something about being wary of spinal issues.

Anything else I should be lookin' for?

Like young firemouths they dont seem to be overly colourful.

Can I be confident the colour will kick in .... or not ?

There is also a few young salvinis that dont look to bad.

Any-one with opinions on those?

Elliotis will almost always show colors, regardless. The issue is yes, with their spine, and it seems like an issue that will take quite a lot of work to fix (not a single breeder has managed it yet, that I know off). It doesn't actually affect anything tho, almost all of those afflicted can swim normally and do everything normally.

Salvinis can be really nice, there are some nice quality ones going around recently. Not sure if the ones you see are some of those.

Still think the "Old Fashioned Normal Jacks" are pretty cool,Thinking of getting them renamed "Jack Nicholsons" for more appeal with the "younger" generations.

Any seconders ???

Holly smokes folks.

Wonders never cease.

Just had a few young Super Green Texas turn up at the LFS.

Hard to get a good look at 'em cowering behind a filter and went home to sleep on the decision.

Have looked at a few pics on the net and have decided to have a closer look at them tomorrow.

Any ideas on how aggressive they actually are?

Reports I've found online vary considerably.
