GreekStylez
Hi All, Just wondering whether sandstone rocks from the yard can be used in aquarium tanks safely? If so, how do i clean them in an appropriate manner to be safe within the tank? Thanks
anchar
Sandstone is very porous, and is capable of adsorbing pesticides, insecticides, herbicides and fertilisers. These, in turn, will be released into your aquarium. Secondly, depending upon the "cement" use to hold the sand together, some sandstones are not suitable for use in many biotope aquariums. There will be an article posted shortly that will elaborate on the use of different rock types in the aquarium. HTH. merjo
GreekStylez
I think that would be a great idea. Seems like the topic of what rocks to use has raised a great debate and amount of interest. Thankyou for the information

Falcon
Have to agree with Mbuna. Been using sandstone for 12months with no problems, they look great and very easy to obtain. Jim
Ducksta
I have used sandstone in tanks for ages! Never seen any ill effects I can relate to it. However, I am careful where I collect it from, and I dont just pull it out of garden beds and such.

Falcon
GreekStylez, Yiassou: Heaps of roadwork out our way (Menai), where you can obtain it from, about 20 mins from u on M5. It ends up in landfill sites, so I dont think it will be a problem and theres plenty to pick and choose from. Jim
