rosco
Hi all, As some of you know I have recently had a massive loss in one of my tanks. I reckon by tonight I would have lost the last of my display males I still have the 5 BN catsfish in there and appear unaffected at this stage. So now what do I do to ensure that the either the white spot ,or more likely from talking to various people yesterday, a vicious baterial infection. I don't want tosentence any more fish to death. I have treating the tank with with bactronex and ichonex for the past 9 days and I will put the next dose in tomorrow. cheers Rosco
Eddie Salita
I would reccomend protozin, sterazin or both. Or a massive dose of betadine or potassium permanganate or even chlorine may be cheaper and more effective. I'd serioisly consider new gravel if it was mine. I'm really not sure what to do with the b/n. Maybe quarrantine them for some time? You need to be carefull with them, they may be carriers but showing no illness if its the nasty unknown. Therefore inducing sickness in the other fish. They are different to cichlids, maybe they carry but dont get sick. This is a long shot tho. A couple of ideas anyway..... Ant
I once bombed a tank with milton (chlorine) tablets and it worked a treat, obviously your Bn's would need to be removed. Anthony
r.d.m
also imperative that you replace the gravel ,get everything else wrong but you MUST do this!
YeW
Hi - I'd remove everything and clean it with bleach. Rinse well, dry and then start over. Dont forget to cycle. There are some VERY nasty white spot strains around so dont be so quick to point the finger at the poor bacteria . HTH -
Ducksta
If it is an option, I would leave it all in the sun. UV is the best steraliser going around.
novafishy
Protozin seemed to work wonders for me. Steralize the tank in the sun too. Leave it in full sun light for a few days, then clean and scrub with bleach, then leave in sun again. Make sure no traces of bleach remain. YeW
Hi All- Without knowing which bacteria (if any) are involved, dosing random meds is a complete waste of time and money. Bleach will kill ALL bacteria. UV doubly so.
rosco
Thanks for all the responses. While sad it should turn out OK as it was probably time for a change. I think that I will break the tank down and start again. Should do a total clean on the filter or do you think that it would be OK to keep it cycling on another tank? cheers Rosco
canerod
Totally clean everything. If its a bacterial thing it would be in the filter as well. I've just gone thru the same thing with one of my tanks, two colonies of fish died in there one fish at a time at the rate of about one or two a week, but the BN fry seemed unaffected. Once those fry have grown out and been moved the tank will be totally stripped and sterilized before anything else goes in there. Bob
static
I have used Protozin too, it worked even with my loaches at half dose. Remember to take out any thing you dont wont strained blue thu.
youngy_11
hi, I think my 3ft display tank has got a small out break of white spot. I have put some Ickaway in there and i will get some protozin as you guys have said. I think i got it off a pant that i brought the other day. Should i chuck the plant out and is there anything else to try and get rid of the disease. eg, increase temp. thanks ryan
YeW
Hi Ryan - Doubt it came in on the plant, though it may of. Check your heaters. White spot (less virulent forms) are common in tanks and dont cause disease unless the fish are stressed. For treatment follow the instructions on the bottle. rosco
Thanks all, Since the last of display males died I was going to remove the BN and put them in an isolation ward and restart my tank from scratch this weekend. But because I bumped up the temperature (I suspect) I have a heap of little BN in the tank. What a rollacoster ride fish keeping can be So it will have to wait for a while. cheers Rosco

Never had a disease problem in past 5 years prior to that they lost quite a few fish on the odd occasion to disease. youngy_11
ok Well how do you put it in your tank? How much does it cost thanks youngy
rae
ok Well how do you put it in your tank? How much does it cost thanks youngy ← Pretty easy really, just by a processor (link to AOA below) and hook it up to an air pump. Put the air line in your sump with a good quality oxygen/ozone air stone and set the timer to your tank size. If you don't use a sump you can connect it to a powerhead air inlet. Link to AOA Kind Reagrds Gavin BTW: just make sure you put the ozone in downstream from your filter inlet, as ozone will kill your good filter media if you have it to close to the filter inlet.
