Feeding Fish when you go away?

Hi Michael, i personally dont like other ppl feeding my fishies, especially my family cause they always overfeed my cichlids, so if it was me i would just not feed them at all, its just 6days im sure they'll be fine (unless they were fry, cause they would get pretty skinny), or if you want you can get those auto fish feeders, but it could get pretty expensive if you have multiple tanks to feed. .......cheers thumb.gifthumb.gif

When I used to go away regularly, I bought a whole heap of the tiny little plastic ziplock bags (about 5x8cm). I portioned out the amounts to be fed to each tank and sat them on top of the tank. I then left a schedule for when to feed one bag per tank and stuck it up in the fish room. I made it so they would only have to feed the fish every 3 days. Worked a treat and not too much hassle for "non fishy" types smile.gif

As stated, 6 days without food shouldn't hurt them. I doubt you'll have any waste on the bottom of your tanks when you get home laugh.gif

I've done the same thing in the past only with empty film containers instead of ziplock bags.

We're going away for 5 days later this year and I wont bother with most of the fish, but I might get someone to come over once or twice and feed any small fry I have at the time.

As everyone says, its only the fry that are a problem.

So feed the fry to the big fish before you go

no problem

clap.gif nice thinking. family always over feeds them, my dad is always feeding mine, putting o much food in, food is just floating around for ages dry.gif

My automatic feeder clogged on the second day of it's schedule when we went away at xmas. I used flakes, should've used pellets - lesson learned. dry.gif

However fish consequently weren't fed for 7 days. These are big African Haps and peacocks, but no dramas. They were damn hungry upon my return but still alive and full of energy.

Only thing I've heard about not feeding fish for a while is that aggression can become a problem if left too long.

But 6 days should be no problemo.

smile.gif Like Baz, I also use empty film containers to portion out the food for my guys before I go away. Than I simply have a mate tip each container into each tank each 3 days. That makes sure that right amount, and right types of food go to each tank. well, at least it makes me responsible, not the mate "helping out" babysitting my fish. Having said all that, it can be a bit of a pain "loading" enough film canisters to do 200 tanks for 3 weeks !! But even with 3 weeks away losses were nil. Hope this helps.
