chocolate cichlids

Author: luke austin

hi,
was just wondering if anybody out there keeps or has kept chocolate cichlids and what were they like? I'm considering keeping them but the info I've got from about the net is pretty varied. Some say that they're peaceful, others go as far as saying that they're piscavorial and aggressive... and so on. So what are they really like?
thanks, Luke

I had two together in a tank and one would constantly beat up on the other if it came near it but left everything else alone. My experience anyway.

Author: searlesy

Hey Luke, you are from Newcastle way arent you? I have a chocolate about 7 inches long, in with Andys albino tiger oscar hank (pretty damn big), and my tiger oscar, just a little smaller than hank. The chocolate used to occaisionally mouth grip the oscar for a split second, and sometimes mouth barge him, but overall a very peaceful fish, more than capable of holding his own amongst other big fish. You would be welcome to come around sometime and check it out if you like, if you havent seen one of a decent size before.

Author: Gcichlid

Beautiful fish especially when large. I have kept quite a few and grown them to maturity but I've also found them VERY prone to hole in head disease when mature. When they get HinH they are much more difficult to treat than oscars etc and very quickly become a real mess, beyond saving.

Similar temprament to Severums and Festivums. Fairly territorial when in F/M pairs. They dont seem to be as common these days in lfs and the only ones I've seen lately were in a Sydney inner west lfs at ridiculous prices ($169 each!)at approx 6" size.

I dont really have time to though at the moment cause i have uni exams till thursday, but I might try to organise to come see them after that. I'm pretty sure its what i want though, something a little different but still plenty of fun!

I'll send you an e-mail and organise a time etc.

thanks for your reply, Luke.

Author: BadBlueWS6

Chocolates are great. I used to get mine around the size of quarters and let them grow. They are nicely tempered as mentioned. My large one was a good 1.5 inches wide from looking him dead in the face...he was a good 10" round. They change colors drastically if you turn a light on in the room after being in darkness. I miss mine, but for $169 that's crazy....guess they are hard to come by in Australia? I just saw a bunch of juveniles...they ranged in size from 1-3" round and ran for about $5.99 US dollars.

Don't feel so bad, I just paid $5.99 for a 1" Kenyi and a 1" Brichardi

and a 1" Kribensis.

I was spoiled by years of wholesale buying when I live in the Northeast USA.

Oh well, what we do for our fish
