Prime Alternative

Hi there, I want to know if there are cheaper alternatives to Prime. I see Prime and Safe do not list their ingredients and read form other threads that it does not remove heavy metals nor it provides slime coat like it claims.

What do you guys use for water conditioning?

Maybe off direct reply to the topic of the question, but I think the comment may still pertinent, least wise, it was what came to my mind when I read it.

Prime and Safe's active ingredients are the same. Prime is less concentrated, a liquid and has slime coat replacements. Safe is a powder, more concentrated and has no slime coat additives. For me, the slime coat additive is neither here nor there as if a water change is done to cause as little fluctuation in conditions as possible (e.g. pre prepared water change water), then the fish won't be stressed to sloth their slime. Safe, being cheaper, does not have this extra "benefit", but is it needed? Once again, for me, it isn't with a water change. But the advantage Prime does have is that due to the slim coat characteristic it is good to go with fish being transported in bags. Also, in addition, not being as concentrated as Safe, you can work out a correct dosage for small volumes of water. Try working out a correct dosage for Safe to be added to a fish bag....so Prime is the go here for me. But Safe is a much cheaper and more concentrated water conditioner for large water changes so is the product of first choice for me.

i use safe only cos of the water volume it treats per teaspoon i think its 750l.i pretreat my water for my tangs in a water drum to treat two 5 by 2 by 2.i use a full teaspoon only cos it covers me for spikes when im siphoning the substrate .featherfins dig pits and sometimes ill leave the pit for a period of time.disturbing these can give off toxic gases and ammonia spikes.sometimes ill add 2 teaspoons never had any issues even with fry all are happy.as for transporting fish a short distance u shouldnt need it.mayb selling at the auctions or shipping but not locally.when was the last time u saw an aquarium add prime to its bags even if youre over an hour away.ive never seen it and ive shopped just about all over sydney

A couple of weeks back my lfs was out of prime so I purchased a small tub of safe. Added it to my ageing barrel at recommended dosage and aerated for a couple of days prior then performed my usual 30-40% water change and noticed not long after my stunning pair of perfectly healthy blue rams retreated to underneath the anubias leaves and appeared to be panting and breathing heavily. I woke the next morning to the male dead and also an angel fish, the next day the female died. Don't think ill be using safe again went straight down to another store and grabbed a big bottle of prime and things are back to normal, I tested for nitrites and nothing and the ammonia alert was yellow the whole time so that's all I could put it down to. Im sure there is nothinh wrong with the product I may have just messed up the dosage. So if anyone near my area with heaps of tanks wants a 50gm tub for free pm me.

Been using Prime for over nine years. I use it for all water changes, wether that be weekly or a larger water removal for particular breeding requirements. I have NEVER had any issues with fish stress nor any casualties due to water change. For 90% of my changes I use water straight from the tap. Very satisfied with this product AND you can get it very cost effectively thru online retailers.

Cant speak highly enough of prime. Love the stuff and only running the one 3 foot tank it remains really cheap still.

I use Prime as my main. I have recently run out and been using API's water conditioner for my changes and that has been working a treat just works out more expensive as it isn't a concentrate. Been looking at an inline dechlorination to do an overflow system. They are pricey up front but they process like 350000 litres 9 LPM
