Bruce
My multies have finally started breeding and I was wondering what to feed the babies? I am feeding the parents NLS 1mm sinking cichlid pellets. The tank is 2.5ft high so I can't hand feed them. Will they eat the NLS? I also have some sera flora I crush up. Bruce
poxboy
I find shelly fry do extemely well on freshly hatched or frozen baby brine shrimp, then get them onto crushed pellet/flake later on. Bretto.
Bruce
I'm afraid my leptosomas will get to all the BBS before the baby multies have a chance. Bruce
novafishy
i use the NLS 1mm sinking cichlid pellets and they're thriving. Try some flakes and frozen bbs if u have some. if u can't, just the NLS 1mm sinking cichlid pellets will be fine.
WAZ
Hi Bruce I would use the NLS Growth Formula, which is a 0.5mm sinking/floating pellet, as I believe the 1mm pellet is too big for fry, and even the multies.
BaZ
I agree with Waz. I use this food with all my fry and they love it. Mbuna fry can take it straight from the container from day 1, however my multi fry need it a little smaller so I simply crush rub some between my fingers as I feed that tank. The parents eat the bigger bits and the fry get the smaller stuff. Too easy
Ash
Hi Bruce I would use the NLS Growth Formula, which is a 0.35mm sinking/floating pellet← fixed. I used this & actually had to grind it finer for my american fry to eat it at first. growth rate is pretty darn good compared to the previous fry I raised on crushed flake. parkesg
Bruce, I wouldn't worry too much about the lepto's eating all the bbs, the multies will get their fair share + it will do the lepto's the world of good. how big are the lepto's?
waruna
I would feed NLS Grow pellets for your fry. For your multies, you can feed NLS small fish formula, which is a 0.5mm pellet food. When fed the correct amount and the correct size pellets, you can feed any type of NLS and your fish will thrive. HTH Waruna
Bruce
What about the 1mm pellets finely crushed with a mortar and pestle or something? Or soaked and then mash them up? Bruce
CThompson
Use NLS, and simply put it through a pepper grinder, use a mortar and pestle if you like, but it will become a bit time consuming. I wouldn't grind it in between fingers, as our fingers are not clean, and will have oils and so on from our skin will be put with the food, not to mention getting a uniform size, and then having it stuck to your fingers. You’ll have more waste too if you use your fingers. Would you be better off using the Grow formula or the standard cichlid NLS? In your case because you have other fish in there that are adults, I would be more inclined to use the NLS cichlid food and not the Grow formula. The babies will still do well with this, and at the same time you would not be giving more protein to the adults than is in NLS cichlid food. Most pepper grinders have the facility to change the grain size produced, so as the babies get bigger, you can increase the pellet/grain size produced. I have found that, believe it or not, the Tupperware pepper grinder to be the best I’ve used. It doesn’t clog up over time, is easy to use when your hands are a bit wet, and has the easiest adjustment to grinding size that I have used. A pepper grinder is a standard fish food container at my place.

Ash
I got a generic plastic pepper grinder from Woolies but it was too course to gring the grow formula so I had to modifiy it myself - it ground up the 1mm & 3mm pellets no worries however

Just feed the right size pellets mate. Use NLS, and simply put it through a pepper grinder, use a mortar and pestle if you like, but it will become a bit time consuming What if you put it in a clean bag and leave it behind the tyre of your car...........na just kidding mate
Bruce
Ok so I actually saw the fry not inside the mouth today I put some frozen BBS into the tank but it floated and wouldn't stay near their shells and then the other fish got it. I am also going away for a week and I need to leave the tank to be easily maintained by my family so I was thinking of getting the BBS, mixing it with tank water, putting it in a syringe and squirt it around their shells.
