Different ways to build a tank

Ok then it seems there is the two main ways to build a glass tank.

Method one, which all the tanks I've owned use, is for the base to be smaller and all the sides go around the edge of the base.

Method two, is for the base to cover the whole footprint and then the sides go on top around the edge.

This one is mostly what I have seen in many DIY videos and on web sites especially those produced in the U.S.

What are peoples thoughts on the pros and cons of doing it either way?

the later is how you would tile a bathroom not sure the benefits of a tank though.

I also am unsure of the mechanics of what would work better - they both work fine if enough silicone is used.

I have only made one tank, quite large at over 1200 litres with the base smaller and sides around it. I held it together with a couple ratchet trailer tie belts around it while the silicone dried. I would have had to use more internal spacers or some sort of a jig if using the other method.

With putting sides on top of the base however you could get away with being a bit out with measurements, because gravity will ensure there is good contact with the base.

Obviously people do it otherwise, but all my tanks are always on the outside. i doubt it makes any difference at the end of the day though. The only thing I could possibly say is that if its glued on top then the water pressure is pushing on the join and if its joined on the side then its pushing on the side of the glass.

Im no tank builder but my thoughts are that with method one the water pressure is trying to push the joint apart & with two it is trying to shear the joint & it's a lott easer to shear than push or pull things apart.

for me it is around the base

level surface with sheets of newspaper underneath

make sure the front and rear sheets are the base length + 2 x the glass thickness

+ 4mm this will give you a 2mm sealant gap

always leave a 1-2mm sealant gap never butt it up hard against the other sheets

to hold the sides up use a small bucket with sand in it either side of the glass

fit the ends first as they are the same width as the base

then fit front and rear sheets

once the 4 sheets are in place some masking tape on the corners till it sets

when set add the braces

don't fiddle too much with the sealant and just a wet finger to smooth the sealant out

have plenty of newspaper to wipe you finger with
