sam.apo
My 6x2x2 with 4 ft sump makes a lot of noise .. i think the majority of the noise comes from the water going into the weir and then down the pipe to the sump... any advice on reducing the noise? simy696
can u put a small piece over the weir? as i think u believe thats where the noise is.
simy696
my sumps currently not covered may get some to put over it also easy to remove if required light weight and apparantly the air gap in it makes a big difference to noise and heat loss i believe so to your message wouldnt hurt to put some over sump also. sam.apo
I think its more the trickle noise when the water falls down the weir... ive thought of putting some kind of sponge or media on the weir .. but i think id have to fill the whole weir up.. im not sure if thats a good idea

Chuckmeister
honestly I've spent many years and quite a few dollars trying to make my sump quiet and I still haven't managed yet.You need to be careful with anything that can block up as your sump will just keep on filling if there is a blockage and sump spills can dump alot of water quickly..my down pipes are wrapped in sound insulation, my sump is covered and my lids are basically sound insulated and my tank still makes a noise. My idea is that if you have a sump, you have better custom made filtration but the trade off is a little noise. There was a sump question recently and I recommended canisters if its in your lounge or living area and your concerned about noise. Its easy to buy an oversized canister and it will always be quiet.edit spelling

Mattzilla
Durso Standpipei use one on my sump and it's pretty much silenthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dli56BLV0Tohttp://www.dursostandpipes.com/then add a basic pvc spary bar just above or at the water line in your sump. something with big holes like thishttps://amazonianaquarium.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/24231_367661445990_542370990_5343464_859566_n.jpghope that helps

mjoconr
When I setup my 5" the noise was over the top. Initial I changed both of my stand pipes to Durso's (http://www.dursostandpipes.com/) and once I did that I found that the AC ehim pump was also a problem so I changed that for a DC Waveline. A that point it was 90% better, about 3 month later I changed on of the stand pipes to a syphon by adding a tap near the water line of the sump. At this point the tank can not be heard, its silent.Note: you must have a backup stand pipe if your going to have a syphon because they can become blocked (the tap that is)
rosco
The Durso is gold. This is mine:Without waterBtw I lowered it to tank height later onI also have submerged inlet (see the first chamber) as I have a Matrix sump which deadens the noise. I have a 7500 per hour laguna pump and it is almost dead silent. (Although I have throttled the throughput sightly)It was the number rule I was given when I got a display tank no noise. sam.apo
..dunno if im understanding this correctly...the weir fills with water.. and the pipe in the weir is below the water level.. creating a vaccum/ siphon?? So theres a constant flow of water not just a trickle??
mjoconr
The weir fills with water, this water has to go somewhere so it trickles over the inside of the pipe. As the water gets higher and higher the volume of water going though the pipe increases. The issue is that if it becomes a siphon the flow rate will increase dramatically and actually end up being greater than the water going over the weir causing the water level to drop and the siphon to break. This causes a lot of noise. So we have to stop the siphon from forming, this is done with the hole in the top of the tee piece of the Durso. The hole is much smaller than the pipe diameter so the whole devices acts as a muffler. And because a siphon can not be form we do not get the massive increase of water flow. The size of the hole is adjusted to match the flow rate.As I mentioned I have a Durso and a siphon, and to stop the noise I have a tap which slows the flow to a balancing point. BUT the issue is a tap can and will get blocked so you must have a backup.
intangcity
i drilled a heap of holes in my standpipes but when i found out the water level in the weir i then put some jap mat around the pipe cut to the same shape and diameter of the weir it quietened it down more i dont have pics though.the jap mat sat just below the water level as to not get saturated but just to shut the noise down
rosco
It works like a reverse self priming s-bend. The trick is tuning the Durso. If the hole is too large it will effectively "flush". I drilled a 3-4mm hole in the top of my Durso standpipe and then put a little bit of silcone to slightly coverthe hole for finely tuning the water level in the Weir. I have 32mm outlet with 25mm inlet. As it is coming in faster than the water gravity drains so it is always good to use different sized piping. I also have a redirect line from the pump back into the sump to lower the throughput slightly. CheersRosco
sam.apo
Sounds interesting. I will definitely consider the durso.
sam.apo
I also have to set up the auto top up and over flow on the sump..but im a bit worried about having a tap turned on constantly in between walls of gyprock for the auto top up.. when i set the tank up initially it kept leaking so i just left it off.. i have alot of work ahead. pjmowens
I will vouch for having a full siphon and a durso as back up. You may be limited to the number of bulkheads already in the weir though . From experience a lot of sound is created by the sound of the water falling over the weir. Best bet is to lift the level as high as you can with durso etc on top to counteract that. jcsongei
I just set up a storm water down pipe rather than a durso as part of my setup and the falling water was quite loud. I made it nearly silent by cutting a strip from an old beach towel and hanging that in the pipe. Maybe hanging some type of material/mat along your weir will help.
