fatglenn
Hi all, I have a group of fish which were sold to me as Red Zebra Minos Reef variant. My understanding is that the males are blue and the females are yellow/orange. I have 2 blue ones with 6 of the yellow and it now looks like two of the yellow ones are males. They certainly dominate the colony and are showing some egg spots. Just wondering if anyone else has kept these and if this is normal for them. I guess otherwise they may have been hybidised somewhere along the way. Any feedback would be appreciated.thanks, Glenn
Link2Hell
Hi GlennPs esterae AKA Tangerine Zebra AKA Red Zebra Minos reefmales are blue females are orange not pale orange /yellow anddefinitely no black marking, but they do throw red males andthere was a period that the red males were preferred thankfully the blue male is now the preferred optionhaving said this there is no telling the history of what we still haveyou just have to pick the brightest orange females to breed from
fatglenn
Hey Chris, thanks for the comments.. The you tubes I have looked at certainly back yuou up, my "females" are nowhere near as orange yet. The blue ones are a bit drab too but i think this is because of the two dominanat yellow males. Will pull them out of the group and see how it settles.Cheers, Glenn
vadnappa
I have a colony of red zebra, blue males orange females. I get the occasional light brown female come through and the breeder I got them off has had some ob females come through. I thought some of the females might be orange males as they had egg spots and were dominant but when I vented them they all vented female and have since held mouthfuls. fatglenn
I am interested to hear this, my fish are still too young to breed but I was wondering about the egg spots as some of the smaller orange ones are showing them too. Unfortunately i don't have the best eyesight so venting is difficult for me, it looks like I should wait a little longer before i pull out the two big orange ones.thanks for the info.Glenn
vadnappa
Mine took a lot longer than 'normal' to start to breed consistently. And I lost a couple early on to aggression but they seemed to have sorted themselves out now and have started breeding well. If they are the same line as mine I wouldn't put much chop into egg spots I think all my girls have them to some degree
Buccal
Damn, I wish I could find some one with quality blue/orange And-Or. Solid deep orange morphs,,, willing to ship to Perth.Everything here is all interbred losing the vividness with a odd nice one. (Pulu crossed with estherie).Checked out some blue male morph type here,,, males looked as light as cobalt blues and females were a light apricot yellowy color, not good at all.Seems to be heaps in QLD, but no ones willing to ship,, even if I buy bulk with other stuff included.Looking for ages COL,,, (cry out loud). Link2Hell
Females can show egg spot like Cobalt's do, so you need to vent sexBuccal you are very right regarding the diluting of these with Pulu andwhat ever else was sold as red zebra with hazy past linagethis is the problem with the hobby, popularity varies and fish are sold offnew people come into the hobby with nil knowledge and are only considereda cash cow by a lot of LFS that are run and staffed by people that don'thave product knowledge of the livestock alsoit comes down to a handful of fishkeepers that kept a specieslong term that pulls those fish back into the hobbyI'm a firm believer that fish can be that common they become rare because theyare perceived to have no cash returnthere are just too many species that need work to keep in the hobby compared topeople that have time, space and funds especially in the limited market we havecompared to overseas

Yes I've seen this to many times,,, I woke up to this ages ago and have kept stashing species away,,, and wait till the time is right.Unfortunately if a shop isn't a true specialist in this,,, then the cheaper fish by non-experienced breeders (not always) make it into there for sale tanks instead of the quality stuff by organized breeders. It's a shame really but it happens. The two main shops here in Perth has got this under wraps pretty well now.The other raggity shops around here don't stock to much these days as they killed themselves with shady stock,,,, and the people traffic has well thinned out,,, they may say bad economy, lol, maybe partial, but a specialist can adapt and very on the ball with a eye for quality to attract the limited audience. vadnappa
Sorry buccal, I would love to help you out, hopefully i won't be so busy soon and have a chance to ship some over to you. My pulus have started breeding solidly. The colony was a very slow starter I have mixed it around a lot and seems to be the right mix at the moment. I will have pulus well before red/blues as they have been such a pain to get hold of I would like to grow a few out to hang onto.
