myster619
Let's see if we can come up with a list of fishes and cichlids that can thrive without a heater. Here in Sydney, the temperature at the moment is around 16-18 degrees. I am interested to start a cool water tank but not with goldfishes. I know of some already but want to be surprised.
Noddy65
I don't have heaters in any of my tanks...in most houses it really doesn't get that cold in Sydney
Alvon
I have had a few tougher Malawis in 13degree water.. I think they were Electric Yellows, Red Borleyi, Kingsizei etc.Really Noddy?? I thought out your way there would be a layer of ice on the water in your shed.. Another option is shrimp.. Apparently overseas they survive even with a layer of ice on the surface. I had them breeding like mad in winter with no heater in the tank.
Ged
Geophagus brasiliensis has a self sustaining population in Bennett Brook in WA with fish having the ability to survive a temperature range between 29.3 degrees C and 13.8 degrees C. Water temperatures do get down to 8 degrees and whilst some die there is not a total fish kill.
CichlidProfessional
Ive heard Blue Acaras can survive without a heater...otherwise only common sub-tropicals like certain danios, barbs, corydoras, tetras and livebearers would suit for a coldwater tank year round...maybe some Australian natives aswell
Link2Hell
Gymnogeophagus like to be winteredjust remember that fish with a low temp tolerance don't like high temps
Topogigio
Green terrors.... I had some in 15 degree water for a couple of weeks (obviously they had all of summer and autumn to get used to this low temp)
Euan Edwards
Depends where you live, on the Gold Coast most Central Americans will survive all year round outside.

A few weeks ago it was 4 degrees at 1 pm with the apparent temp of-3 because of the -7 wind chill factor. Brrrrrr.
Ged
I was in Canberra on that day and it was bitter.
Firemouth
I've got Rosy barbs and White clouds in an outdoor pond where nights regularly go sub zero in the winter.
