Water turn over on Tropheus Tanks

Hi all,

Reading some of the posts started today got me thinking. Is 2000lt per hour into a 6x2x2 enough for a colony of Tropheus?

How many times do you turn your tank volume over?

Are you doing it for water quality or for water flow?

Both. I have the 3 canisters for water quality, plus I have the returns pointed at the surface for increased agitation. I also have a powerhead for water flow, it also is pointed at the surface. This gives me peace of mind that my Ts are getting heaps of oxygen. Definately an advantage on these hot days we are having.

Jamie.

Sorry, forgot about the turnover. My tank is 470 litres. My canisters do 3000l/h altogether, my powerhead does 2000l/h. So, about 10 times an hour, but canisters never run at the output printed full of media so I guess it's more like 8 times an hour.

Ben.. i think u should be ok provided your nitrate levels are at a minimum. The key is to do regular water changes. U may want to add a canister for clarity.

However, i did hear someone say that too much water movement may reduce breeding levels - are they pulling my leg?

I think about three times an hour is plenty. There is always the danger of over filtering. I think water changes are more important, there is also the danger that by over filtering people get a bit slack with the water changes.
