bucket less water changes

Hello. I'm soon upgrading to a bigger tank. 320l a bit bigger than my current 90 l.

At the moment water changes are done with a syphon and bucket for water out and buckets only for water in. My tank is not close to taps / sink.

I see online many overseas people use pythons or other water changes. Are these available in Australia or if notwhat do others use?

Thanks

If you have the standard gravel vac/syphon and a gardern hose the water out bit shouldn't be too bad. You run the hose out the door/window etc and use the gravel vac to start the siphon over a bucket. You should be able to quickly jam the clear vinyl tube while it is running into the garden hose, saves having to gou out side to start the siphon. Back filling is usually a problem whenn trying to connect a hose to a mixer tap inside. Good luck trying to improvise that one.

I DIYed a gravel vac using a 1.5L soft drink bottle and a length of 19mm clear vinyl tubing that reached out to the garden.

Cut the bottom off the bottle and then jam the 19mm tubing into the top of the bottle. With a bit of practice you can start the siphon easily and vac your substrate and water the garden at the same time. The 19mm vinyl hose is just the right size for irrigation fittings so you can connect it to the garden hose to fill up. If I was concerned about the temperature of the water from the hose I would slowly add a bucket of warm water to take the edge off.

If you are filling up straight from a tap remember to add water conditioner to treat the entire volume of the tank not just the amount you took out.

Skippy this is exactly what I use to do with my large tank 10 years ago. With buckets the water change would take a long time! So i bought a Aqua Systems 10m Grey Water Diverter Hose (from bunnings) which is 22mm and fit that straight over a 2 litre bottle of coke or soft drink. All you need to do is take the lid off the bottle and fit the grey water hose on and if need be secure it with a hose clamp. Awesome water change tool! I always fill my tanks straight from the hose, never ever had a problem...not sure why people use buckets for large tanks, I guess they must enjoy doing it the hard way!

Hi,

I have a 6x2x2, have long hose, empty water into th drain, then to refill have a power head, Put in. 30 liter bucket, with power head, 350 litres of water changed within 1 hour, no work, just having a drink while refilling.

Pretty simple really, do weekly water changes no problem.

Cheers,just an idea
