South American Cichlid Tank

I have finally set up my 5x2x2 tank a couple of weeks ago and put into the tank the inhabitants of a standard 4ft tank (overcrowded). This included a couple of Severums, 3 Geophagus Brasiliensis, 2 x small Geo Tapajo, one choclate Cichlid and a couple of bristlenose. So far everything has gone well and I used an existing 1500ltr canister filter as well as buying a new Resun 2800ltr filter (its massive)

One of my objectives and it needs to occur was to place the inhabitants of an additional standard 4ft tank in the 5ft tank. I am intending to do this over the next couple of weeks and I just advice / opinions from the forum members as to what fish I should include into the 5ft tank this week and the fish to leave until next week or a couple of weeks later. The fish in the 4ft tank are as follows:

3 x Severums (medium), 1 x Chocolate Cichlid, 2 x Pakistani Loaches (1 large and 1 medium) 2 x medium thread fin Acaras and 1 x Green Chromide.

I just want to ensure that the filters can handle the bio load as well as ensuring the agreesion is not too bad.

I can use some additional internal and canister filters if required in the short term to handle the bio load if needed as they are operating currently in the 4ft tank.

watch the Brasiliensis when they get bigger they can be aggressive and they also

do better in higher pH with the Green Chromide that do best in an alkaline brackish

tank and like vegies and the others better at neutral + or - 0.2 but that's how I keep

my Geo, Chocs and Heckelli

BTW where did you find the GC they haven't been around for a while

Ha the Green Chromide you could say was a 'rescue' from someone who did not want it any more. I have had it about 9 months and was small when I saved it. I have read that although they are known for being able to survive in Brackish water they actually thrive in fresh water. It was an article from the uk magazine Practical Fish Keeping from approx 2007. It has had no problems adapting to the tank.

The PH of Canberra water is over 7.0 and the Brasiliensis are doing ok. I have had them breed on a couple of occasions but all fry were eaten by other fish. Had them over 2 years now.

In regards to my original question, any recommendations which fish I should transfer this weekend to the 5ft tank and which to leave to next time?

Good to hear your GC was a rescue and has thrived for you

Terry Rowlands in Perth used to breed them and supplied the hobby

but as with most things he passed them on and they seem to be very

scarce now days

Brasils are very adaptable and a reason for their feral populations out here

even in the Swan River in WA

if they are breeding then they are happy

1 x Chocolate Cichlid, 2 x Pakistani Loaches (1 large and 1 medium) 2 x

medium thread fin Acarasas far as what to move would be the first

Ok thanks. I did the move yesterday (also included a medium sized Severum) whilst doing a water change. So far aggression has been minimal and that the existing filters plus the additional internal filter appear to be coping with the extra bio load. I will definitely keep a watch on the water though through testing during the week.

Probably wait another 2 weeks before re-housing the remaining fish as I do need the space where the remaining 4ft tank is as I will be using it to put in a 6x2x2 African Cichlid tank. As with the 5ft South American tank it will be filled with inhabitants of 2 current standard 4ft tanks I have running.
