hoody
going to make my own LED for my 6x2x2, i cant justify spending so much money on a factory light that is simple and not growing plants.im going to place the leds inside some roof guttering i think.ive been looking on ebay and came across these.http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12V-Cool-White-5M-3528-SMD-300-Leds-LED-Strips-Strip-Light-Waterproof-Dimmer-/330955322011?pt=AU_Lighting_Fans&hash=item4d0e79729bhttp://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12V-Blue-5M-5050-SMD-300-Leds-LED-Strips-Strip-Light-Waterproof-/331210790218?pt=AU_Lighting_Fans&hash=item4d1db3954aits only for a 2 foot deep display tank that will have mainly aulonocaras in it.anyone know what they're talking about with this stuff?Cheers,Karl. intangcity
i have these around my tinny they lighten it right up at night great lights mine are 12 volt if the ones you are getting are 12v ull need a transformer.the roof guttering is a gd idea ive seen it done at a few smaller aquariums i guess to also save money just make sure you earth the guttering because you never know a bit of moisture from live wires to metal can do wonders. hoody
yeah thats a good idea, i might have a look around and see if i can get a plastic one.those ones have the option for the transformer for another $15 or something so thats easy.
rosco
I thought it was a good idea at the time to get strip lighting but it ended up a bit of a disaster I bought two of these reels one was good one wasn't. One hada plug one didn't or was pretty dodgy. If you do go down this path get the aussie approved transformer. I found some at the led shop in qld. They also have syrup lighting for a few bucks than ebay but you can send them back a lot easier. Cheers
Josh
I would also look at mounting them on a flat surface and not worry about the guttering.I don't know how well these lights would light a two foot deep tank
hoody
there is a jaycar not to far i've looked their strip lights for a 5m strip is $70 is there any other alternatives?100% agree with you josh, i was thinking of some timber inside the channel of the guttering to bring it down some. kanned_guru
My advice would be to ditch the idea of LED strips and go for spotlights. 3 10w spotties would suffice for a 6x2x2, although you could always add more if you really wanted to.

Pharmlou
I bought some inexpensive led strips from eBay, local supplier called spider 1397. They come with two different types of mounts, adjustable brightness and transformer included.. I used two three foot strips for my 6x2x2 Frontosa tank and two four foot strips for my mixed mbuna, peacock and Hap tank ( also 6x2). One bright white and one blue strip for each tank with individual output control for each strip. The adjustability is very important in getting the right amount of light. Good luck
