DNA testing

DNA testing used to cost thousands but that was some time ago. Not sure why you would dna test a fish. All it will result back is the dna of your current fish with no other data to compare it too. Its likely they will come back and say, yes its a cichlid..or am I missing something?

edit - the best way to cross reference a fish imo is to research the net but also buy books and cross reference from reputable authors

I also think it would be a waste of time if there is no known record of the DNA of that fish.

any particular reason why you want to DNA test your fish?

I have no idea who would do the testing, maybe ask a vet or someone like that. I dont know where you will find a sample to check it against. Its probably alot of effort to got to just to find out if your fish is pure.

I would contact the Molecular Fisheries Laboratory based at the University of Queensland. Email Jenny Ovenden

j.ovenden@uq.edu.au

Being a university that may be able to access the appropriate DNA markers for a particular species from overseas.

As to the cost your guess is as good as mine. I know when I had to send off samples for DNA testing of stud cattle it was only around $40 per test. These also were sent to the University of Queensland.
