e-blues- Substrate or flatrock spawners?

Author: BettaAnt

Ive read contradictory information on where they actually spawn. My male has chosen a flat rock to display over, but he has also dug a pit in the substrate. I have read from one source that they breed on flat rock and from another source saysthey breed in substrate like most other haps, which is more accurate or are both accurate?

Fire-ant

, Mate i try to encourage all mouth brooders to spawn on flat rock/slate/glass etc

As this would reduce the risk of the females intaking substrate which can destroy many eggs during the tumbling process

, just my theory

I know that a lot of people say that e.blues come from different parts of Lake Malawi, could it be possible that depending on where the fish were caught that they would adopt different breeding habits? Lake Malawi can't all be the same from one end to the other. Maybe that will account for the different breeding techniques.

Author: wui39

I was also interested because i notice my male e.blue has marked his "territory" in the less heavily rocked area ofthe aquarium. He constanlty hovers above a large flatish rock and drives other fish smaller than fim away....he tried challenging a larger fuellebourni and similar size frontosa...they put him in his place

i never see him digging the gravel though so......i think i've mananged a moutful with the female curently in there(she's not eating after putting on a lot of weight...at first her bottom jaw was big like she was holding but now its sort of normal looking) she hangs around the more rocky area

I remove all the substrate before putting the eggs into tumblers. Try it - works much better
Anthony, my blues breed on the substrate even though flat rocks are supplied

Author: BettaAnt

thanks for all replies, the male and female were gettin quite frisky inside a terracotta put now, ive made more gravel space infront of that pot so they have plenty or room to do there ting now, so fingers crossed

Umm you should'nt forget that is it not protocol during the 'art/s ' of "LOVEMAKING" to stick to a standard rootine ( sorry ,spelling

) Or do you do it in the same place or on the same substrate each time ???
