BaZ
I'm wanting to sink a big bag of limestone into my sump and am having trouble finding a suitable bag. I currently have oyster shells in a large onion bag (5kg bag I think ) but the weave of that that bag is too big for the limestone 'gravel' I will be using. I'm under the impression that some fruits or veges come in large bags which are a nice fine weave similar to a media bag, but am yet to find any. Of course I'll happily buy a purpose-designed bag from an aquarium store but I am not sure if they come in a large size. Does anyone know?

BaZ
Mike do spuds come in a fine weave bag? One suitable for holding gravel? It's like coarse coral sand I guess. Not sure that I've seen spuds sold that way around here, but perhaps I'm just looking in the wrong shops. Duck stockings should work but like you said they would need to be big
mianos
I wrap my media up in plastic flyscreen. It's almost perfect as it does not 'wet' and the water flows through it very easily. I sit the media on it and wrap it up leaving the top over. I then fold the top over in the sump. My bioballs are like this. I also have two sacks one on top of the other in my deeper sump. This way I can grab the top bag and rinse it out in the cycled water.
Ash
If you wanted to go one step further than mianos' great suggestion, perhaps sew flyscreen into a bag with light fishing line?
kemst
I'm sure I have seen large bags that would be suitable in material and craft shops such as Spotlight (?) Surely they have a zillion different materials of various weave sizes that could be made into bags easily enough (curtain netting etc...)
mianos
I was going to hand sew them up but I initially cable tied the top closed but I found it stays together fine without the cable tie and it's more convenient left open.
Ducksta
Nice idea Mianos/Ash, I wouldn't use light fishing line though - remember when you pick the bag up full it will be heavy.
Nigel
Ehiem make a large filter bag for there big barrel filters. I use them for the pond matrix I have in the mimi reefs. The problem with some of the bags is they brake down after a while and what ever you had in them ends up all over the filter. I have had the Eheim ones for years with out any problems. BaZ
Thanks for the ideas I'd already considered flyscreen but I think I'd need to be sewing it into a bag/envelope kind of thing as access to this sump is limited and I'll be adding this with one hand. The eheim bags sound good Nigel. Have you seen them somewhere recently? Any idea of price?
Nigel
I think Auburn Aquarium or Ben at Age of Aquariums should be able to get them for you. As for price it was a long time ago I brought any and I got them from the importer I think they where about $15 each. There is also washing bags if you can find one big enough they should not brake down.
duck
go to $2 shop look for washing bag ...it comes with zip too
Unnatural_Selector
The holes are too big for gravel in washing bags Ive seen... and stockings seem to restrict waterflow a bit unless its being forced through. Id go with flyscreen, works for me! (also I use aluminium flyscreen, anyone believe there would be a problem with this?)
catcher
G'day BaZ, I use laundry bags all the time for Matrix and the like. They are quite a good weave size and thinking that once in place they won't be moved very often the laundry bags are micky mouse! $2 shops, K-mart, Big W has em in all sizes. glenn ps: If your worried about the weave size do what I do, slip one bag inside another, the holes never line up so you effectively halve the weave size! duck
i use washing bag to hold my eheim media just fine .... the holes are just about 3mm.. some come with smaller holes

Phenomena
If you want something bigger than washing bag, go for a bag used for basket balls/volley balls. I got mine from Big W in the sports section. It's REALLY BIG. I think it's made of cotton and will break down eventually. HTH...

carlos
wouldnt the zipper (rust) on the washing bags be a problem? especially seeing as people add salts in the water! thats whats worried me about using them
youngy_11
I have the same query carlos. I have about 5 of these laundry bags at home that i would like to use in my sumps. Will the zippers rust? The bags that i own, have the zippers painted but i doubt the paint will last very long in water. any ideas? thanks youngy
anchar
BaZ...grab the sewing machine and wiz up a pillow case type shape (basically 3 straight runs) using fine curtain netting. Very cheap from Spotlight (or the like). Go the extra mile and put a draw string in the top....very easy. Andrea
BaZ
Sounds like a great idea Merjo but you lost me when you said grab the sewing machine Am talking to Ben at AOA. Will let you all know what he comes up with
