They will not leave it when the eggs hatch. Its quite cool to see the male guard the fry. When the fry swim out of the nest, the male wil pick up the fry in his mouth and bring it back to the nest. They are quite good parents.

Author: Guschi

Rather new to fish-keeping & recently acquired 19 convicts (various ages) and have tried to separate them by size/sex (at least until I can find new homes for some). One pair that hangs together is of a large, seemingly dominant male and what I thought was another younger male- no bright colouring like a female and longer fins, but it does appear to have the ovipositor "displaying". I left them together for now.

They are digging happily under a "cave" and appear to be nesting. The larger male was rather aggressive and protective. Is it possible that two males would act this way or is this possible that the female just isn't showing the usual colouring? The other smaller females are brightly coloured.

Any info would be most helpful!
The Female has she got ornage around her belly if she does shes a female and if they breed well the smaller is a female.

My convicts just had eggs and i saw it
The female will stay around the nest and when they hatch they will keep an eye on them.

I figured if they didn't kill each other and appear to like each other, then it doesn't really matter. Guess when I see babies, I'll know!
