Fluval FX5 media configuration

Dear All,

Wondering what the best way to place the media would be in my Fluval FX5.

Currently, all levels have the foam for mechanical filtration. Bottom level has small size bio-balls. Middle has ceramic rings and top has larger size bio-balls (size of golf balls).

Is this going to be effective or should I do something differently?

I also have some matrix I can transfer from an established tank... where would the matrix be most effective?

Thanks

Hi Noyd, How you put in your biological filtration is up to you. Whatever you feel looks best for yourself.

I would still put in a little mechanical filtration though.

I'm not familiar with fluval so not sure if the water enters from the top or bottom of the cannister but I'd put it wherever the water enters.

If you think that the amount of filter media that fluval have given you is a little light on then you can put in some extra. The amount of extra is up to you but personally myself I jam in as much as the filter can hold. It doesn't even need to be the same media type.

Hi Noyd

bio balls are not designed for being submerged and are for the trickle

feed section of a sump

I don't run Fluvals but the normal rule to packing filters is

coarse media at the bottom eg ceramic rings, matting or nylon scourer pads

next up foam

next up bio media eg matrix

last is fine eg Dacron mat or filter wool

this way the larger particulates are caught by the coarse media and the foam

catches the smaller ones before the bio media stopping it from clogging and the

filter mat is the final filter for small particles
