Rocks: Placement (001)

Recommended Posts

I was planning on placing this styrofoam sheets under limestone i got from somewhere and checked if they smell the same as the aquarium underlay thingy. However they smelt differently. The aquarium one didnt smell at all. Is this the only safe one to use in the aquarium?

Though some books (Back to Nature) recommend putting polystyrene in the tank under rocks to protect the glass from breaking, it is not a good idea. When polystyrene is burned, most people will be aware that there are some toxic issues to consider. It is also the same if you put it in a fish tank, as I believe that polystyrene holds the potential to leach out some of its poisons, as it does when it is burnt.

If the rock is not too big, just place it carefully.

If you are still concerned, if the tank is empty, put some silicone “worms” back and forth where you are intending to place the rock. Once dry, this will keep the rock off the glass.
