Rocks: Coral (001)

Recommended Posts

It does buff the PH but it also has many sharp edges.

Sharp things in your tank "can" mean damaged fish. Just keep that in mind. It's never been a problem for me but a mate has had his 3" E.yellow quite damaged after being chased through it several times by a similar sized Cobolt blue. Obviously it has since been removed, crushed and is now used in his filter. It works much better at buffing the PH this way too.

i'm not sure what the status of legality of using corals in tanks.

i guess it's illegal to harvest corals but they're readily available in LFS as substrate etc.

another alternative you can use is crushed marble.. as noted earlier, it's crushed so there are sharp edges which can hurt your fish specially those that mouth substrate.

Corals are fine in tanks aslong is they are free of all organic life in the coral. Usually leaving them outside in the sun for a month will fix this.

As long as the coral is washed up on the shore you are free to take it. However you cannot remove it unless it is obviously dead/detached. Harvesting live coral is a punishable offence. So is selling of dead coral that you cannot prove was washed up on the shore.

You would be hard up to find and substancially large pieces of dead coral on the shoreline that havent been smashed up before making it to shore.

Stores sometimes sell dead coral try a local marine fish store they stock it as suppliment to live coral.

I brought some nice pieces back with me from Fiji. We were staying on an island and the stuff just kept washing up on shore!

I declared it coming through customs, and they were fine with it once they realised it was dead.

Hi all,

I'm not sure about the legalities concerning coral in the east but over here anything within a certain distance from the water (I think up to the berm line) is illegal to take. This includes shells, rock, seaweed, coral etc. dead or alive. It provides habitats for sea creatures and the fines are nasty. Take care. I know of someone who was fined $500.00 for removing limestone from a Perth beach (first offence).
