raze
Hi!My setup is currently 160L tank. Ph is around the 7.4 (I need to get it up to 8). Have texas holey rock in there with a couple of things to hide. I have a few questions as I am new to keeping fish and don't trust the pet shops for advice!1) New to keeping fish and I want to have a go at breeding these guys so would love some general advice on that! Have watched youtube vids and was planning two weeks after the female stops eating to remove the fry from her mouth into a separate tank.2) Also I am feeding hikari cichlid excel but have heard good things on New life spectrum as well?3) I am feeding a couple of pinches of the excel twice daily. Is this enough? They eat it in seconds lol!4) My tank has a top filter box this one here http://www.aquaticsupplies.com.au/blue-planet-filter-box-atlantis-vista-and-paradiso-aquariums-r-060.html. I know your bigger external filters are far superior from having a murray river turtle but this should be good to drop the water a 1/3 every two weeks? 5) Is calcium carbonate the best way to raise my ph up some more? How much would you recommend or what would you recommend?6) When I check ammonia levels my test tube is a white clear liquid and doesn't go yellow like the chart that comes with it. Is this normal? Thanks for reading and anyone who takes the time to respond! I like to get the advice direct from enthusiasts rather than pet shops as enthusiasts usually have the animals best interest at heart plus the bonus of people who deal specifically with what you have is often more accurate than someone who has to deal with a huge range of animals. Of course there are very knowledgeable people in the pet shops who are spot on but I have been caught before so I am cautious to double check. Cheers,Matt. Ged
Matt welcome to ACE Forums. I hope you you find the place informative. You may find that Protomelas sp. "Steveni Taiwan" Chimoto Red (Higga Reef) will outgrow the tank that you have them in. They will grow up to 20cm so a 160l tank is a touch small. How many have you got and what are the dimensions of the tank? Not knowing how many you have I can tell if you are over or under feeding. I would recommend you do weekly water changes as they will produce a far amount of waste in that size tank. The filter you have has a turn over of 1100 lph so is sufficient for that size tank but check the filter media. Not being familiar with this exact model can you tell me the filter media that it is using. I suggest you use Cichlid Salt to adjust you pH. The Texas Holey Rock will be buffering the water as the limestone is continually leach calcium carbonate into the water. All the Ammonia test kits that I am aware of have yellow as the base colour that indicates 0 ppm. To have your test kit staying clear doesn't sound correct. What brand is your test kit. raze
Hi Ged!How big of a tank are we talking here? I have 6 fish 2 males 4 females. Males are about 3 inches and females about 2 inches. The filter media is a combination of pads, noodles, balls and charcoal. I brought some more charcoal but I did read that the charcoal can absorb good things out of the water also so I have not replaced that yet,Test kit is API .Thanks
