Got my first herp!

Thanks to Yew, and everyone else i've harrassed since i got my permit, but now i'm officially a herper! I'm that happy with myself i can barely contain it!

I've got a pair of these little guys in an 18"x14"x14" at the moment, but i think i'll eventually cut the divider out of the tank, to give more space, do they need it?

I'm using river sand (really coarse stuff) for the substrate, and i plan to add a maiden hair fern, or other small plant. Theres a nice bit of wood in there and i smashed up some slate to make a couple of rock piles, which is where they've taken up. After 5mins in the tank they took turns to scarper under the biggest pile, and they haven't really moved since.

Have i messed up? Have i missed something?

Can someone help me out with species specs? I've only been able to find very general stuff, it's either about Binoes or Leopard gecko's.

Most geckos are more active at night, if you establish them in a larger tank and use a small red party globe.. You will then see them at their most active times ..

Also with geckos when i had bynoes and barkers i used to only place the food in at night

that way there was no chance that the crickets would nibble on the geckoes while they slept ..

Hey there Skidoo!

Congratulations on your induction into the herp world! :D Excellent choice of first animal - although I would have gone for snakes, personally! :p

It doesn't sound like you did anything wrong in the setup, but I am not the world's best lizard specialist... lol But it does seem pretty normal for a gecko to seek retreat upon being introduced to a new environment. Don't forget, they are nocturnal as well, so perhaps it will be best to observe their nightime behaviour and see how they go.

Good luck with it mate!

Andrew.

oracle, i think they said it would take 10 days to two weeks to process? I can't remember but it took exactly as long as they said it would, no worries no hassles, it was really easy and really worth it!

I'm loving them still, and they are settling in nicely, at least they don't seem not to like it!

Are there many gecko keepers out there?

Hi Evan

Glad you're happy with them they are cute little buggers. They were feeding very actively 3 times a week on small crickets or feeder roachs (small >1cm).

Get yourself a small "red" heat lamp so you can watch them at light.

Keep us posted > they are great to watch when hunting :p.

Yeah, don't worry i'm planning to get a little lamp that i can use in a small bedside light, i just wanna watch em at night a bit, i don't really need it to heat them because i've got them in my 'fish room' that my 72x20x20 does a good job of keeping around 24deg, and humid.

Yew, could you recommend an info source for Gecko's, i'm having some real trouble finding anything on them. All the web sites iv'e found say little more than, "they are cute, they are fun, they eat little things, they will escape if they can, heres a blurry pic of one i saw"

I used to have a book that had a page on every herp in NSW, just a good colour plate with a basic profile including I.D info (scale counts and the such) habitat, diet, and a little about their general lifecycle and behaivour. But i can't remeber it's name! Any good books/websites?
