Mixing is a success!!!!!

Author: slotha

Well i've done it! I now have mixed a 17cm Jack Dempsey and a Texas with 2 turtles and an eel. They are all very happy scouraging for little yabbies and other things in the substrate. At first they didn't know what on earth what the other was. Pretty funny for the first couple of hours.
I have housed turtles with barcoo grunters, other Ozzie fish of similar size as well as large americans ..

You will get to see some funny things along the way

The barcoo used to sit on the turtles shell and ride him around the tank *Surfing safari here we come*
Should also note that the turtles need to be able to bask out of the water, i used a largish rock in the centre of tank..

Author: slotha

They are Eatern Long-Necks. The tank is a 6x2wx2.5h. I'll try and get a couple of photos. I've only got a Kodak DC3200 which is pretty useless for tank photos.

Author: Fish Fanatic

do you have land for the turtles? Is it true that they can survive without land?

Author: slotha

They can survive but its not very humane. They should have a basking area where they can dry out completely. You can either build up a rock formation making sure they can climb out easily, or silicone a piece of glass horizontal and have a sand or pebbles as the base of the platform kinda like this

The basking area should be 6-8in from full spectrum light. Sorry pretty poor diagram.
What equippment do u need to keep turtles? How much would the set-up cost?

Author: slotha

Hi FF, sorry i just looked at this post again and for some strange reason my diagram has turned all stuffed up. But you get the idea? First things first,
1. Get a licence for $40 and it last you 2 years. The form can be sent out to you from the 'National Parks & Wildlife Service' or have a look at the first post on this page. It will take you to the form.
2.Get yourself a tank, the bigger the better.
3.Heater depending on where you live. The Eastern Long-Necked Turtles like the temp between 22C-26C
4.Filter
5.Some little river pebbles for them to rumadge through and for live food to hide in.
6.Set it all up and let cycle with a couple of fish
Post an add on some of the Australian Herp Forums saying 'WTB Turtle'
What type of turtle are you after btw?
I take mine out in the sun for an hour every few days or abit of a walk and sunbake. They can be quick though so keep an eye on them.
Oops just remembered that you need a Full Sprectrum light to which can be abit pricey. Your lfs will help you out with the best one for you. The set up didn't cost me anything as i already had all the gear.

Author: Fish Fanatic

Hey slotha :
I'm in Melbourne, don't think you need a license for turtles down here???
Actually, I was after some of the smaller turtles, but all they seem to stock is the eastern long necks. Do u know where I can get some smaller ones?

Thanks

Author: E4G13M4N

As far as Vic not having a permit system for turtles.. I wouldnt know.. But i beleive they do have a minimum selling size which is 10cm ..
Bit of an old law that they used from the Yanks as in the USA
i think its the box turtle that can transmit salminella when under that size..So the old school beleived all turtles did the same ..

Just a bit of useless infomation
