Mbuna
i think its just beach sand but it looks great and its easy to syphon crap off the bottom of the tank.
Stuart74
I had to vote other as i have several with Gravel some with coral sand and now 2 others that have a mix of coral/normal sand plus the bare bottom fry tanks.
Guest Gutty
Crushed marble for Africans. Normal 3mm gravel with a handful or crushed marble mixed in for Americans.
pride
I use the RG8 gravel sand mix which I bought from Auburn Aquarium. It has a nice look with American cichlids.
OziOscar
In the Malawi tank I use crushed coral mixed with 15 mm Cowra white quartz pebbles and in the planted tanks I use 3 mm gravel (various colours) over a bed of prepared soil. I used to use sand when I had Oscars, but they seem to find it fun to spit sand into the filter intakes. I also used sand in my old marine set up but had a different intake set up so the sand had a short chance to settle before clogging up the works. Sand looks really great, especially with the right lighting. Trying to keep the layer thin enough so that you don't get anaerobic pockets can be fun at first... or thick enough so that some of the substrate mining funsters don't make it all blow away in the current. I went gravel because I am lazy. Cheers - OziOscar.
