Dull yellows?

Hi all just after some reassurance of my latest purchase, I bought a small colony of electric yellows today as I'm setting up some breeding tanks.

The fish I bought seem some what dull in yellow compared to the small one I already had in my display tank.

I have attached a few pics to see, the small one I have had since I first started the tank purchased from a fantastic private breeder not far from me and it's a beautiful fish how ever the new ones I bought which are twice the size are very dull in comparison.

I will also note the parents of my new ones where a very beautiful rich yellow and looked fantastic as well so not sure why all there fry and juveniles where so boring

In the first pic my original one is in the top right corner and in the second pic his in the middle.

You can clearly see the color difference, how ever the male of the new lot seems to show through nice color.

Am I right to believe this is possibly just a crappy breeding line and I should give up on them and start with some from my other breeder or could there color change with diet and enviroment/water quality?

Yeah they did look pretty dull at there house I was comparing in my mind the size of some of there fry to my original one which is beautiful in color and there's where literally a brown fish. No disrespect to them they where lovely people and had a great set up and looked as though they knew what they where doing and there add had a great picture of a group of nice rich yellow juvenile

There is variability in the colour of electric yellows. My experience is that their colour should not change significantly, unless they have been feed colour enhancing foods. Good coloured parents can throw paler fry, but normally good coloured yellows have good fry.

It's good to view the parents, if possible, because some adults get a black tinge or barring, which seems to be an undesirable trait at the moment. This will usually manifest itself in adult fish. If you see it in the parents, good chance you'll see it in the fry when they grow up.

I wouldn't expect your fish to get much brighter, I'm afraid. Some fry can be really bright yellow even at 1 cm, which usually is a good sign for adulthood.

Damn yeah there males got very dark and mucky in the adult talk only the females where a nice yellow. I think i might not persist with these ones.

If i was going to have a go at breeding i would rather it be done with a really nice colored colony

I think you have answered your own question already :)

If you are wanting to breed any fish, you need to first obtain the best quality specimens you can find. If your preference is for electric yellows where both the males and females have nice clean bright colour, then you need to start with breeding stock with those traits.

Donny

they may improve in colour but doubt them getting to the same standard you already have

a wise old fish keeper told me always buy the best fish even if they cost a bit more as

it costs the same to feed good fish as it does to feed ordinary ones

Yes of course I think I bought these more so because I felt rude that I may have stuffed these people around in buying them.

I think I'll get some more smaller high quality ones from my normal place of purchase and wait till there ready to breed and maybe just see if anyone wants to buy the duller ones I just bought, there still a nice looking fish just no where near the quality of my other breeders.

I would like to breed some saulosi but haven't found anyone selling a descent group worth purchasing and the yellows seem to be an easy one to breed so thought I would start with them, other wise I might have a go at the acei tanzania as I think they are a beautiful fish

No offence taken Yellow i wasnt going to breed with these for that exact reason, if i was going to breed cichlids i would want them to me top quality and true blood line.

I have already put these up for sale for a new home and i will continue my search for a more pure strain

I will check out dfishkeeper, is he in Melbourne?

Hi Donny,

I am on the Gold Coast, but I can ship to Melbourne airport with Qantas Freight.

See the For Sale thread in the link below, there is a recent post from somebody else in Melbourne asking if anybody wishes to share the freight cost on a shipment to Melbourne :

Ha Donny find them a good home. I've bred a heap of yellows and while establishing colonies from all over there is alot of very ordinary yellows out there. Some nearly look white. Always breed with the best fish available that way your fish will always look there best. With a good diet and water quality fish will always shine, but a dull fish will always be a dull fish. Happy hunting. Viper.
