vadnappa
I'm down in Melbourne and I have had a daphnia culture going for years in one of those 200l blue plastic drums. It doesn't do much through the colder months but when it's warm and the algae blooms I can collect a bit out to give to fry or fussy eaters for a little boost. Anyway I haven't checked on it in ages and we have had some nice sunny days so this arvo I went and had a look. Usually in its peak you can see a few dozen mid sized daphnia jerking through the water near the surface. Today however I discovered a magpie had decided that my drum looked like a good place to end it's days and was floating in the water, a fair way into the decomposing process. And the drum is like a thick daphnia soup and they are huge. I knew they could feed on bacteria but had never seen them in these kind of numbers. And what are the chances of a magpie calling it quits in there of all places.
