Frontosa death

Hi everyone,

I have a 3 foot x 2 foot x 2 1/2 foot tank with frontosa's and lion head cichlid fry. This is the second batch of frontosa's I have lost. Tank has been cycling for about 6 months. I clean the filter every 6 to 8 weeks with tank water.

The fish seem to be gasping for air and sitting on the bottom of the tank before they die. I change the water every second week. I use seachem cichlid lake salt with every water change. I use prime water conditioner. Water temp 27 degrees. Tank has air pump. Aquaone 2400 canister filter.

Frontosa's only fish that seem to be affected catfish and lion head cichlids are all doing fine

I have a second tank 5 foot that has yellows, blues, white knights, peacocks, and dolphin fish that I clean and maintain the same way. This tank has been running for about 2 years

Could any one have any ideas

I have read a lot of the articles I think I am doing the write thing

The only thing I can think of is that I put the prime water conditioner in after I have changed the water. Should I add it to each bucket of water before I put it in the tank?

Some help would be appreciated as I would like to try again but hesitant until I work out why they are dying

Small frontosa can be quite touchy at these small sizes.

From experience in breeding them,,, they are fairly easily over fed.

If you try them again,,, try feeding every second day till they hit 6-7 cm.

25% water change shouldn't effect them.

But do ammonia tests on your tap water.

Maybe back of on filter cleans to,,, with small fish and bio load the filter should go 3 times longer minimum.

PH 7.6 to 7.8

GH 250.6

KH 53

Sorry I took a while to get back to you I had to buy KH & GH test kit. I purchased the fry, if anything i have more oxygen pumping through my tank than where I purchased them from. Looks like I need to use a buffer to raise the KH level.

Would this be the reason why I lost them?
