can i put my breeding jewels in a plastic tank inside the main tank

Hi guys this is my first post,

i have two cichlid tanks at the moment in one tank i have breeding red jewel and blue they had some tiny fry which i thought i would move to a floating holding tank. in doing this i pretty much killed them all (rookie mistake) i just looked over at my other tank and saw my two red jewels laying eggs and picking them up.

I've just read that they pick them up and then find a place to lay them.

my question is can put them both in one of those plastic fish tanks with the perforated lids for reptiles or betta's 29x19x22

so they can have the eggs then fry in the main tank but in the safety of the plastic tank?

or is it not enough room for them?

it has plenty of holes at the top for circulation and i have seen plenty of these used as a time out box for cichlids, but after accidentally murdering the fry in the other tank yesterday i don't want to do it again.

also if i am not ment to move them do i get a rock decent sized pebble to give them a place in the corner to lay the eggs?

and finally when do i move the fry?

thanks Rob

Hi Rob welcome to ACE

what size are your tanks and what do you have in them

Jewels are very good parents usually so unless there are other fish in the tank

I would leave them alone to raise their spawn

you need water circulation in a fry holding floaty but the fry are small enough

to go through the screen

in my opinion the plastic tank is too small for them and if some thing goes wrong

with the spawn you will have one fish

Jewels are genus Hemichromis and are substrate spawners the only time they with

mouth the fry is when they hatch and are transferred to the nursery pits waiting for

them to absorb the egg sac and become free swimming

the pair will clean a spawning site before laying this is usually a rock, flowerpot or

the tank glass

you can raise the fry from eggs but you require a tank with filtration to put the spawn

site in you will also need a heater and an airstone to give water flow over the eggs

thanks for the welcome Chris,

the long tank is roughly about 120 in length and about 220litres

the shorter tank is roughly about 90cm in length bout much higher and deeper so its about 280 litres

i have jewels in both tanks the red jewels that witnessed laying eggs and collecting again are in the longer tank.

in that tank are some frontosa a fire dragon colony, a cobalt, a lamprogolus, an electric yellow, tropheus, Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos,Psuesdotropheus socolofi, 1x male OB juvenile and 2x female Ob juvenile, a Nimbochromis, phenochilus gissel female, male juvi oropharynx lithobates and a green terror i think it is?? as well as some clowns and cleaners

in terms of cleaning they cleaned an area and then they did the dance for a few hours both picking up eggs but this was all done on gravel?

as a second part to this in the second (bigger) tank i have some red jewels and recently found some blue jewels and add them in within weeks the two jewels mated i found some tiny fry in the corner and the mother looking over them i went to move them all to the safety of a floating tank while i work out what to do but in moving them they died they were smaller than the holes in my net so rookie move cost me what i would think would be an amazing mix. anyways i just wanted to get them right this time, to be honest i didn't think they were egg layers if i new i probably would not have moved them and just made an area for them

I've attached the pic of the holding tank i want to use.

i had a small tank made up and just place a small sponge filter in it or a large airstone depends on how im feeling.i change the water everyday in small amounts.i have this floating in my 5-2-2 but it sticks to the glass just by wetting the side of it and applying light pressure.its approx 1ft long by 8in dep by 10in high.ive had occelatus spawn in it,ive kept fry in it,brine shrimp, cherry shrimp ive had calvus breed in it.not all at the same time obviously.its even been used as a hospital tank for harassed or sick fish
