I own two convict cichlids and I have a 46 litre tank that they are in, I bought two silver sharks and threw them in there too, now only to find out they aren't compatible and also the sharks need ALOT more room. Right, so now I have bought a new tank which is 4ft long (currently on laybuy for a few weeks) but my trouble is, what fish do I put in the big tank?

Do I keep my convicts separate? I was told they will do fine with any "Central american" fish by a supposed fish expert, then i was told they are extremely aggressive and can't go with any fish! Which one is it?

Do I put my convict in the big tank, along with all the new fish I will be getting (no idea yet, hence this article) so what would you recommend go with the convicts? Or would you recommend keeping them completely separate and put my sharks in the big tank with other fish? If so, what other fish?

YES, I am a new to caring for fish, don't bag me out saying "dont get anything, you dont know how to do blah blah" because I am learning. By adding new fish and doing my research, I learn how to take care of each species specifically, their requirements etc. but it certainly seems the pet stores may lie a little just to get a sale so I need YOUR help!

:raisehand: Hi codiejoy

welcome to ACE forums

a few questions first

how big are the convicts and are they a boy & girl

silver sharks need a larger tank so 4ft is good but ....

they do scare easy and are known jumpers so lids on at all times

other centrals that will fit in with the convicts would be Texas , Dempsey,

Firemouth, Elliotti and Red Humps

these are all mid sized that can hold their own and not over aggressive

do not add other Archocentrus with the convicts like Blue eye Spilurum

or Sajica as they will crossbred

what filtration do you have on your current tank and what will you be

using on the new tank

Thanks for the reply. As I am a new starter, I have no idea what filtration to use on my new tank and was going to head down to the pet store next week and ask what is best to go with that tank and throw it on laybuy too.

In the tank im using at the moment I have an aqua one over hang 300 filter (bought secondhand though, my new filter will be brand new) and I also have an bubble machine (aerator) at the other end of the tank.

I think I have a male and female convict cichlid as my smaller one has orange on the belly and the larger one doesnt (where i bought them from, the lady told me this is how you tell them apart, and she wanted me to have both sexes in case I decided to breed them one day). The larger one is no bigger than 6CM (he is probably about 5CM or so) ad my smalle rone about 1CM smaller than the larger one.

My new tank has a hood on it as I am aware of the sharks enjoying a good jump!

I;m going to look up all the fish you have recommended and see if any appeal to me :) I generally go for the pretty colours or cool markings!

If you could, can you please forward a link through wikipedia or any other site that shows an image of each fish you recommend? Having trouble finding a few. Thanks in advance :)

UPDATE: Actually I found all of them except the Ellioti fish, now to find if any are for sale around town. Please link me with a photo of the Eliotti cichlid if possible :)

Also, is it these fish you are recommending to put with my convict cichlid or to put with my bala sharks? (starting to think i should keep my convicts on their own to be honest.)
