Rocks: Petrified wood

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Petrified wood is fine to use in aquariums - I have two tanks entirely decorated with it. Just take the usual precautions and clean it thoroughly. Most petrified wood is silica based eg. similar to chert or jasper and is basically inert in water. Some may contain carbonates (eg. limestone like components) which can alter pH and hardness. You can test for limestone by putting a few drops of acid on a newly broken face. If it "fizzes" then it has limestone in its makeup. Hope this helps.

ps. The piece in the photo appears to be chert hence inert;).
