Teamsherman
Hey folks,Now that I'm achieving my previous goal of breeding Peppermints, I want ideas of what breed I should try next? I'm a fan of catfish and really appreciate their method of breeding and would like to try another type of cat. I like the look of the L134's and they seem to be easy to obtain but I'm open to suggestions. I've got a spare tank and a whole lot of filters and heaters ect so I really just need a direction to go in. I've got lots of spare time and patience and money isn't too much of an issue but I'm not going to fork out thousands for fish. Im just after something that will prove a bit more challenging than the Peppermints. I'm not in it to make money at the end, I just like the satisfaction of getting them breeding then moving on to something harder. I would however like to try something that's maybe rare in the Australian hobby and to help increase their numbers here without having to import any. I'm open to suggestions that aren't catfish too but I'm not a huge fan of mouth-brooders. Ok, let me know what you think I could enjoy taking on!! dempsey
L134, L333, L201, all fairly available.Ive not kept 134, but: 333 can be out fairly regularly, and get big.L201 are interesting nocturnal style to keep.I have a black light over their tank, and feed them of a night, then kick back quietly and watch. They are pretty interesting little plecos. But all can be kept and breed fairly easily. Not always as easy as bristlenose though, so a good step up.
Teamsherman
Yeah I've been looking around and found that I really like the looks of the 201's and 134's so I may pick one of them and give them a try!
Ged
You will also need to consider what demand for fry will be like.
Teamsherman
Hey Ged,There's always people willing to buy the fry if they are priced well! Plus, I'm not all too worried about being able to sell the fry quickly or not as I'm not going to breed them just for the sale of the fry, I'll be happy to give some to folks that have helped me out over the years. mac
I would also consider L004, L129 and L387 all available in Australia and a bit rarer fish.Cheers Mac

Teamsherman
I just read an info sheet about the Chubby Pleco's and apparently they haven't yet been bred in captivity???? Is this true or an outdated source? Its dated the 18 November 2014
Chuckmeister
Apparently there is someone in Perth that has locally bred L056. 1500 each or 5 for 7k. Its a bit over the top imo. For 7k I'd rather chase down a group of 10-12 L046. Each to their own I guess
dicky7
I have actually seen them they do exist and they bred in his tank so it is real
dempsey
crazy stupid expensive.Just because its not in the country. Let who ever breed them, keep hundreds of babies he cant sell for that price - lolAt least when Zebra had crazier prices years ago, it was because of its rare presence in nature also..Fishkeepers kept it alive that way. Im not sure if its still a threatened species or not tho.
