With good quality congo you can tell by the colour, males are a lot more colourful than females and usually have longer finnage. I've seen a lot of sub par congos that all look female.

If you are buying 3-4cm Juveniles, your guess is almost as good as mine... However, if you buy from a group of 6-7cm fish, the differences are as clear as night and day. If they all look the same, these are imported fish and are 'show males'.

Males are showy fish and often importers import "large show males" and sell them as such; tank full of males. Your best bet in obtaining female congos is really to buy a group of juveniles and grow them up.

I think that if you cant pick any apart as having short fins then you have all boys

Girls have no fin extensions, have less intense colours even when they are small and when fully grown are decidedly smaller.

what a fluke, 10 males by chance! woot.gif
