MikeWs Fish
Hi guys, quick Q are there any rocks that would be bad for a tank? The rocks that i have are nice n flat but smell a bit like clay. They are hard and dont make the water go cloudy. Could they be bad for my fish? I know the answer is probably no, but just wanna be sure.
Josh
Put them in a big pot and boil them. see if that gets rid of the smell. Where were they before you had them? and do you know what type of rock they are? i.e. sandstone e.t.c. josh
MikeWs Fish
Thanks for the quick reply, I dont know what type of rocks they but they are orangy brown and quite flat. I supsect slate/sandstone or maybe a combination of the two? but i washed most of the dirt off under a tap. They are originally from poxboy's farm/property in the country. I doubt they'd be contaminated with any unnatural chemicals etc.
Serial-Cichlid
Have you tried asking Poxboy if he's used it in his aquarium(s)? That might be a better start. Cheers Paul

anchar
Why don't people read the article section Rock Article merjo PS> from the pics I'd say it is either sedimentary sandstone or metamorphosed sandstone...I have written about both in the article... r.d.m
if your unsure you have 2 options 1. build a nice rockery in your garden. 2. soak the rocks in a plastic container for 2 weeks, if after this time the water smells ok you can use the rocks, however if you stress easily, or have a breeding colony of royal panaques id go to option 1. folkner
Mike, I got the same type of rocks from my inlaws farm out at Grenfell NSW. They look identical to what you have there and they have been fine with my africans for 2 years now. Cheers! Josh

BlakeyBoyR
I'm always wearing when heating sandstone as I've been told they have a nasty habit of exploding. Can anyone either confirm or deny this? I'm not sure if it is an urban legend or a fact
