Flickering lights in Aqua One 620 Aquastyle 90L aquarium

Hi everyone.

I have an Aqua One 620 Aquastyle 90L aquarium. In the past month or so one of my bulbs has been flickering and only just recently has the other one started doing the same thing. I was trying to hold out with one bulb being out but now they're both fairly bad and I am afraid that the constant flickering will negatively impact the fish in the tank.

Where is the best place to buy replacement bulbs? I don't want to waste too much money however I am all for using the genuine Aqua One products if possible. Has anyone heard of Aquarium Spare Parts and would they be good to buy from?

Judging by the link it seems like I have various choices;

  • 53042 - Light Bulb PL-11W Sunlight
  • 53212 - Light Bulb PL-11W Marine Blue
  • 53030 - Light Bulb PL-11W Mix Sunlight/Tropical
  • 53031 - Light Bulb PL-11W Mix Sunlight/Marine Blue
  • 53203 - Light Bulb PL-18W Triphosphor
  • 53213 - Light Bulb PL-18W Marine Blue
  • 53032 - Light Bulb PL-18W Mix Sunlight/Tropical
  • 53033 - Light Bulb PL-18W Mix Sunlight/Marine Blue

What is the best bulb to go for?

I don't know the part numbers for the bulbs I have in there now, but I do know that on switch activates a bulb that has both normal light and what seems like UV light. For a list of fish that I currently have, please click here.

Thanks for your help everyone. The sooner I get this sorted the better as you can understand.

Choosing bulbs is a personal choice. If you have plants then anything from 6500k to 10k is good.

If you have no plants then a 10k bulb is a good general purpose colour range.

Dont bother with marine bulbs as the colour frequency doesn't match imo. I have a 12k light and it has too much green for my liking.

I haven't checked the light specrum of all the bulbs but for basic cichlids with no plants I'd guess sunlight or sunlight tropical will be good.

I see alot of people retro fitting LED's into aqua one tanks though its a little fiddling around. A small DIY job but LED's are definately the future and cheaper to run.

Thanks for the posts guys.

I haven't got any live plants in the tank so that may mean the difference between one type of light over another. Is it a better thing to separate light frequencies (one button turns on just the Sunlight and the other button to turn on just Marine Blue) or should I get the mixed bulb to benefit from both types of light at the same time?

Aren't all light globes same universal fittings ??? I know they are.

But I couldn't confidently answer they fit a aquaone tank as I've never looked at or owned one.

But I've bought power glos that are miniature and skinny to suit mini lamps.

I keep harping on about the power Glo,,,, but it really is that good,,,, LEDs are to white or light blue, and is a bit selective with allowing some colors in fish to pop out.

Powerglo doesn't saturate the water with bright light, but makes colors in fish vivid,,, so that's the effect, fish stand out in a lesser light flooded situation.

I'm extremely wasteful and frivolous with money,, and I went through all brands with powerglo a definite standout.

In fact the perfect combo for amazing display is 80% powerglo and 20% halide,,,, with foreground illuminated and background dim to eccentriate foreground.

This method takes a lot of impact away of the substrate and habitat colors impacting on fish colors.

For 18w T8 tubes you could even find replacement tubes at your local hardware store or an electrical supplier like John R Turk, they will be much cheaper than buying from aquarium stores.

The Aquaone light fittings are just your standard T8 or T5 fluros but some of them are odd lengths/wattages that are hard to find outside of stores that stock Aquaone stuff.

I am pretty sure Power-glo don't make one to fit.

I agree that the power-glo globes are the best.

I didn't even think of that to be honest.

I am getting a pretty sweet deal with Andrew anyway for some replacement bulbs though. He has helped me in the past numerous times so it is only fair for me to return the favour. I'll be picking them up tomorrow evening/Saturday morning. I do thank you all for the replies once again. It's refreshing to find a forum that actually has a community of people willing to help out others, especially those that are quite new to the cichlid scene such as myself.
