Tanks Seams Bowing

Picked up a standard 4ft tank from Dalbarb around a year ago. Noticed that on both ends of the tank, the glass is bowing. However it's not in the centre of the panels, but along the seams with the front panel. Both end on the front side of the tank are having the issue. At the top and bottom of the joint there is no deflection the the joint is flush. However in the centre, one side has a 1mm deflection, the other end of the tank has a 2mm deflection and extends around 1/2 the hight of the joint.

Should I be worried? Ringing Dalbarb tomorrow to see what they can do for me. Tank is just out of its 1 year warranty, but would they still be able to help?

Cheers,

Swim Bladder repair ?

Hi guys I have a fish which after transport had what appeared to be some mucus like stuff and some blood around its belly ( not much but some ). Once in the tank it just sits on the bottom and every now and then will swim a little then sink back down, it would appear to be it has damaged its swim bladder.

Has anybody had success with this ailment self repairing or does anybody have any magic methods for assisting in their repair . I did see a clip of fishermen piercing swim bladders on deep water fish so they could return to the bottom of the ocean so I assume there is some chance of the bladder repairing itself , thanks in advance

Not a regular poster on this board, in fact i havn't posted on fish boards in a long time. But i do spend time trawling this site looking at peoples pics, so thought i might chuck some up.

Just took a few quick snaps of my only fella last night. Bought two of these must of been a couple of years ago now, but they never really seemed to get along. The other jag is back in Brisbane with my mates, this one made the trip with me out to Emerald. Far smaller than the other and used to get beat on by the other till separated.

Have kept a couple of tropical community tanks: tetras, bristlenose, rams, dwarf cichlids and had some cool fish like leopard bushfish, torpedo barbs, tiger plec.

Had some africans for a little while as well but due to moving home 3 or 4 times in the last few years...have only held on to this guy and adopted out is mate.

Have a 2 ft tank ready to be setup and will probably organise in the coming months after i get back from Japan. Am thinking a small tang tank...maybe shellies. I would like to go with a small community of same species fish. Would like to maybe get a good quality batch sent from a breeder rather than a fish store batch.

More photos of the Jag to come.

These fish are seriously nice and relatively peaceful(except to their own species)This pair successfully murdered all its siblings.
They are not particularly predatory not eating some small rainbows and blueyes Ive culled and put in their tank. Ive not seen any spawning activity but lots of time together

I gather these fish have a few spawns then become reproductively inactive

My fish are 17cm amd live in moderately hard and alkaline water

Im interested in peoples experience with these fish
bulbs are fine. they sent out a replacement with new bulbs and it failed in much the same fashion. so rather than play russian roulette picking another

Filterations 1000lph: aqua one or resun

Im looking at improving on filterations so im looking around for one that will do the job but still wont hurt my pocket too much

So far i have a hang on filter cycling over 340lph on a 140l tank i know i needed more volume of water to cycle off to start off with and i knew i would need a canister at some point but didnt think i would need it so soon.
So i've been doing more water changes to balance off the lack of filteration needed so far.
Long story short i came down to either resun or aqua one both will be filtering over 1000lph and both are external filters also what i wanted to know
Which between the two would be better?

Thanks dre

EHEIM SKIM 350 Surface Skimmer Pump

The Eheim Skim 350 pump is a unique product manufactured by Eheim, designed to remove the film that can appear on the surface of your fish tank's water. It is designed for use in small aquariums, up to 350lts and is simple, quick and flexible to use.

In almost any aquarium a film including micro-organisms, dust, oils and food fats forms over time. With the Eheim Skim 350 surface skimmer, you can efficiently eliminate this mould film and have a glass clear water surface and higher oxygenation. The Eheim Skim 350, although designed for constant use is also suitable for short term use. If using alternately in several aquariums, please make sure that algae spores and diseases are not transmitted from one to the other. The bacteria and dirt particles which are sucked in are collected in a filter sponge. This should be taken out and thoroughly cleaned after each use. As this sponge is not designed to form part of a biological filtration system, feel free to rinse it under the tap.

The Eheim Skim 350 is attached to the aquarium using suction cups and the supplied assembly plate enables different assembly options. This surface skimmer is very efficient, using only 5w of power.
The key is the yellow as the baring is a lot easier to breed into them but yellow is hhhaaaaarrrrddd

Hey guys. I've had my tank set up for months now and compared to my mates tanks my water looks not as clear and pristine. If you look really close it appears that there is very tiny particles floating all around and when the light is on they are just magnified. It almost seams like the filter is not catching these tiny particles. They are not air bubbles. Could I need a different filter media? I have a canister filter ATM with the stock filter media in it. I have crushed coral sand as a substrate as well..the rest of the water parameters seem fine and the fish seem healthy. Just doesnt look as clear as it should be.. Thanks.

3 Cyp Females Holding, All Ready!

Hey all, been a month or two since visiting but anyway,

ive got 3 Cyprichromis leptosoma jumbo kamakonde females with huge mouthfuls and about to burst, so im going to attempt to strip tonight, after dark so i can catch them without them spitting, hopefully. I would leave them, but calvus clean the fry up quicksmart so its my only option.

Im about to do water changes and remove the rocks, then turn out the lights in preparation, so has anyone got any tips on stripping Cyps? Ive never stripped mouthbrooders before.

Im going to order some brine eggs from AOE, but that will take minimum a week to come unless i go direct, which i should. So in the next 2 days waiting for them to come, what/how should i feed them. i have frozen brine and NLS as my staple for the adults, so will crushed up stuff be ok for now?

Will put up some pics to show you how huge i expect these clutches to be after WC and tank tidy up.

Cheers for any Help.

Continuum Aquatics AquaBlade Scrapers - The Ultimate Aquarium Scraper

Hi All.

We now stock Jack Kent's Latest invention the AquaBlade Scraper.

Specs -

With its solid construction and molded-in fiberglass handles the AquaBlade looks beautiful. And works beautifully.

Heads above the rest

AquaBlade long scrapers feature solid fiberglass handles. Instead of using glues that break-down like other scrapers, the AquaBlade handles are
v-grooved from the side and inserted into the head of the scraper during the injection molding process. Under thousands of pounds of pressure the handle is fused to the head becoming a part of the molded piece.

No hollowness. No odor.

The AquaBlade is injected molded as a solid piece of plastic which keeps water from entering the unit while using. This means no hollow handles and drizzling of excess water when removed from the aquarium. And without trapped aquarium water inside the scraper it will never develop odors from growing bacteria.

Strength and beauty

By utilizing virgin plastic in the molding process instead of re-grind or recycled plastics, the AquaBlade is much stronger and more agile than other scrapers. The first time you pick up an AquaBlade you’ll notice the difference it makes. It feels strong and durable — perfect for work inside your aquarium.

White Plastic

Allows you to see the scraper more easily through darker algae. This means you don’t miss any spots the first time around the aquarium.

Blades full of sharp ideas

The AquaBlade cyan blade was created by testing countless different types of plastics and plastic blends. The results are a special self lubricating plastic that is softer than acrylic, so it will not scratch acrylic*. Constructed of 316 stainless steel, the AquaBlade metal blade is both strong and rust resistant so removing that stubborn coralline algae is a breeze.

Hey all, so just obtained a 4ft tank and moved my fish down to Sydney from Brisbane (yay!), thought I'd post some pics, even tho there's still a lot of work to be done.

Full tank shot(ish). S'cuse the photography skills, I took these pictures with my iPhone.

Some close up shots of my fish:

Yes, my Festae hides behind the filter. @_@ Poor guy got out-grown by my smaller cichlids and now cowers from everything.

Still needs to:
1.) Clean the glasses.
2.) Add more substrate.
3.) Add deco (rocks, caves, driftwood).
4.) Get proper lids.
5.) Revise stock (optional).

Still lot's to do, but hey, it's a start.

Is this Hole in the Head disease? It's happened before but has cleared up on its own within a few days. This time the hole seems larger.
Is there anything I can do to avoid this? Ammonia/nitrite are 0, nitrate is <40ppm (usually a deep orange that doesn't match anything on the API master kit). I do a 70% WC weekly.

Sunken Belly

Hey guys,

I have recently acquired a colony electric yelllows from someone in newcastle.

Most of the females have sunken belly. I have managed to save some of the females. But there are many that haven't been eating and are being inactive (sitting in corner of tank and just floating around the water surface). I have recently lost 2 females to it recently.

So I'm just posting on here to find how to save fish from sunken belly from your personal experiences.

Any feedback or procedures/ remedies will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Rescued this guy from a LFS. He was almost dead, hardly breathing and the shop assistant was about to put him in the freezer. So i asked if i could have him seeing as they were going to kill him anyway. She agreed and i managed to raise him back to health.

i understand he is more then likely a hybrid of some sort but would be interested to see what you guys thought about him and a possible ID.

Hi

Mangrove Jack. One of the staunchest fish I have ever owned. When I first got him at 10cm, he was tolerant of tank mates. Kept him with African cichlids for about 12 months until he decided life with other fish wasn't for him. He took out a few similarly sized Malawi haps before I decided to keep him solo.

A few months after I got him.

A few weeks back at 40cm, maybe a little larger.

Happy fish keeping.

Hello all, just a quick one. I am wondering if people are using Seachem tang buffer or something other then this. I have been in the marine world for a while and to tell the truth I forget what works best. I plan on being at the action this weekend to buy some fish and don't want to put tap water fish or 7.9 pH odd fish into a 9.0 pH environment. Thanks for any help.

Stocking advise

Hi Guys,

I have been lurking around these forums for awhile now, this is my first post.

I have had a Ciclid tank for about 2 months now.

The tank i have holds 440L. I currently have;

1 x Jack Dempsey
3 x firemouths

All juvenile fish.

So far I have had no issues, all is going well, fish are very healthy.

I wanted to get some ideas on what else I could put in this tank.

I am considering taking one of the firemouths to a lfs as i intended on only getting 2 but the shop I was at had a special where i could get 3 for the same price.

My Jack Dempsey does not seem too agressive thus far, he is full of personality and would have to be my favioute fish.

I have been considering maybe adding an Oscar to the tank?

Any ideas or thoughts on stocking options?

Cheers

Side Drop Filters

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this site. I have recently picked up a few 2ft tanks and am looking to convert them to side drop filtration. I have had a quick search around the site and have a couple of questions about this type of set up.

Firstly, in regards to water turnover, how much flow would each uplift produce? Is this dependant on the diameter of tubing used? I have seen 20mm and 25mm PVC used, which is preferred?

I am considering placing a piece of foam to cover the gap between the glass sheets to act as a prefilter. Can anyone recommend what density this foam should be?

My next question is about glass strength. I will be using 6mm glass. Is there a certain distance that the hole should be drilled from the glass edge to eliminate cracking and is there an ideal height these should be from the top of the tank for the uplifts to pass through?

In terms of substrate with side drop filters, when using sand, is there a tendency for the sand to be drawn though the filter?

And finally, during my search, I found a few references to a thread on the Perth website which I was unable to find. Can someone please provide a link to this as it may answer some of my questions.

Any input and suggestion is much appreciated.

Daphnia outbreak?

Hey All
I have had the weirdest thing happen in a tank tonight.

I went to the fish room to feed the fish. I got around to my Bristlenose tank and the water was moving.. My bristlenose tank is a bit of a mess 200 odd bristlenose eating wood tends to make it a bit messy. I thought it was dirt so freaked a bit, I only did a water change yesterday, but after closer inspection, I have found out its Daphnia. I had to drag out the old microscope to be sure. These things are tiny at the moment, less then half a millimeter at a guess.

In all my years keeping fish I have never seen this happen in my aquarium or any aquarium. I have never feed Daphnia to my fish and the tank was new when I set it up. The only thing I have added is some drift wood that has been sitting around the fishroom for at least 12 months and thats been in there for a month

So I did a bit of research and it seem eggs can lay dormant for up to 20 years....

It will come in handy as I have gotten a new spawn of Kribs and Have a black Calvus girl on eggs too.

Has anyone else had this happen to their tanks

I have had my red tailed black shark for nearly two years now and he has been fine. He has shown no signs of illness or lack of appetite other than he has gotten so big he looks more like a seal than a shark with his belly fading as it stretched. He has been getting fatter and fatter and i thought nothing of it until this morning he was dead. What do you think happened?

Amonia levels in the Sydney water supply

I have been having a look at the tap water parameters from the Sydney Water site. If you are from Sydney, you can see them from your area here:
http://www.sydneywater.com.au/SW/water-the-environment/how-we-manage-sydney-s-water/waterquality/typical-drinking-water-analysis/index.htm

e.g. for my area it says Ammonia (as NH3) .02 mg/l - .39 mg/l. (As a side note, PH is good for Malawi 7.8 - 8.0). I assume a product such as stresscoat for each water change should get rid of this ammonia. I have a bottle of ammolock just in case. Has anyone monitored ammonia levels in Sydney water, how they fluctuate and whether they are an issue before?

GT or JD .... That is the question.

G'day all,

I've a got a 3' display tank that I plan to put a solitary cichlid in with a few silver dollars.
i'd like the fish to be large-ish and colourful.

I'm thinking either male Rivulatus or Jack Dempsey.
Leaning toward the GT due to what I perceive as a less retiring nature.
The last Jack I owned while well marked was at times flighty.

Any opinions would be appreciated.
1. For the safety of the dollars.

2. GTs over JDs or vice versa.

3. Another Sth American that may fit the bill.

thanks In advance.
After my incident with my 2ft procastanated a little bit more but recently bought a 3ft tank 120l i know its more to start off with a 4ft but i have no room
But its alway an excuse to upgrade little bit later when i move out
Tanks been cycled and just have added my first group of juvie and my first fatality on the second day my electric blue got picked on and didnt make its first day but so far what i have are

2x yellow labs
2 yellow tail mpangas
1x crimson tide
1x red zebra
2x common bristle nose
1x red peacock
1x blue peacock
And my favorite my Maingano :D

Im still learning there scientific names but for the time bein there common names seem to work for me

Something i've notice is there colour seems to change or there markings fade and comeback on again
I know its a newbie question but what are the triggers

Im looking at adding plecos i need advice on which one would be best to start off with and if theres any breeders who can supply more cichlids and pleco at the cheaper rate then the lfs stores

Thanks

Advice about stocking a 360l tank

Hi all, I have a few questions about managing and probably restocking a large (360l, 180cmL x 50H x 40D) african cichlid tank at the dental practice where I work.
The tank is already stocked as a "community cichlid tank" and has been for months, the owners paid a local aquarium specialist to set it up and add fish, but I have some doubts about the setup/fish the store chose and I'd like to make some changes. Only thing is I'm really new to cichlids, I've kept other fish before but not these guys, and I don't want to get something really wrong and cause more problems.

The stocking list currently is:
2 Labeotropheus trewavasae (1m 1f), which have been breeding so there's a tiny little one also hiding in the rocks.
2 Synodontis catfish (probably petricola, but they're still small and it's hard to tell)
1 A jacobfreibergi, who is a huge bully
1 Nimbochromis venustus
2 silver dollars who don't seem really happy, though they aren't being beaten up
2 silver sharks
2 plecos, who have easily trebled in size since they arrived

What I would like to do with the tank would be to have:
4 L. trewavasae (1m 3f)
3 L. caeruleas (1m 2f)
3 Cyanotilapia afra (1m 2f)
"Some" Iodotropheus sprengere (I'm not sure about numbers for these guys, could I get away with more than one male in a tank this size? what ratio of males:females is best?
2 synodontis catfish
2 plecos

My questions are can anyone see any problems with the list of fish I would like to have, and would any of the fish interbreed (we don't plan on selling any offspring on, but I'd like to avoid hybrids nonetheless)?
Thanks!

Stocking my cichlid tank ?

What is a good stocking rate for a cichlid tank?

I have a 4x 2 x2ft aquarium. Powered by a large sump filter plenty of rocks ( real and fake to provide cover).

I currently have.

Red empress male female 7cm
Venustus unknown sex. 5cm
Electric yellow male 5cm
Maingarno 2m 5cm
Rusty male 5cm
Electric blue male and female 6cm

My sim for this tank is to be more of a display tank that has a self sustaining population of babies to replace the adults when the time comes. I'm not sure if I have under stocked the tank as I hear that under stocking the tank can led to alot of undesired aggression towards the tanks mates ?

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Raising calvus fry

Any tips on how to successfully raise black calvus fry.

I had a large batch initially and now I'm left with about 10 if I'm lucky. In the last batch I lost the whole lot eventually.

This time I tried two different ways. The first way I put a fry saver (made by Lionel) whihc has an airstone and outlet for water to go back into main tank. I emptied some of the free swimming fry from the female calvus shell into the fry saver. Fed frozen BBS and powdered protein food about 3 times a day. The bottom of the fry saver seemed to get dirty so I siphoned the saver only a couple of times as I'm not sure if I previously siphoned some fry as I found it hard to see. I now have about 2 fry left.

Second way - I emptied some of the free swimming calvus into a fry saver that Matthew made which I have added an airstone to. It's in a one foot tank that I grow out fry in. Fed same as above. Still have about 8 left.

I guess it's all a learning experience so wondering how others raise the fry more successfully?

Thanks.
I want two very distinct types, such as a red and a black sp. the tank is 10x2x2.5 and is for display. If the fish spawn so be it, there will not be any chasing and stripping of fish for onsale. I was thinking 10-12 of each to spread possible aggression, (will increase numbers of recommended).

What fish should i breed

Hi Guys
So i have been having a look around my breeding setup and i dont know if im too happy with what i have breeding at the moment. I have some saulosi breeding which i dont mind. But i also have some hongi and xmas fulu. Now i really enjoy breeding these guys but it becomes a bit hard to move them as all the shops i have phoned have shown no interest in taking any of these guys. Im wondering should i be breeding something else? i have a 4ft tank that has been freed up and i am wondering what i should stock it with. Should i go big and breed some fronties or go tropheus route? im just at a complete loss. Thought i would put this out to the larger community and see what others think. Any feedback suggestions are welcome.
Cheers
