Bought these from the NSWCS auctions.

Need help to make sure these fish are right.

They were bought as Pseudotropheus Saulosi.

Here is the pic of the 1st male just changing

to adult colour looking at the barring

the fish looks like a saulosi to me.

Next is of a male that has changed from juvenile colour

but looking at the fish looks different to the male above

to me looks like a melanochromis interruptus.

Anyone can help with this?

Thanks

Neither fish looks right to me, but both look like young fish changing colours. Give them some more time.

The horizontal bar makes me think they may not be Salousi.

Yeah that's what i was thinking the saulosi don't have the horizontal bar. Also

as i stated these were bought from the cichlid society auction, i bought

2 of these at the auction in September , than another lot of 9 at the major auction in October.

Not off someone in Fairfield, though maybe the breeder in Fairfield is a member at the cichlid society.

Just disappointing.

Hmmm, a fish that looks like saulosi which also changes color.

I have been nothing but disappointed at the auctions. The majority of fishes get there I have seen were mediocre quality, and ill-packed. Once I got myself a pair of tropheops. Went home and found out both were males, one was just less colorful. Both were 15cm+ , so no excuse.

All the committee people at the Cichlid Society Auctions do their best to check in only the purest of species with no deformities or mixed blood lines.

The tropheops 15cm plus pair does not sound right to me. With all tropheops species none that I am aware of get 15cm plus for males and females.

Tropheops Chilumba males only gets 12cm and the female 10cm which is the species I presume you are talking about. Which does resemble PS Saulosi.

Tropheops tropheops does get larger with a max size of 14cm for males.

Hi Jason

they seem to have one too many stripes

can you take any pics of them in a tank so they aren't stressed

also can you contact Lionel or John so they can check the sales

history at the Sept meeting and if the same person put more through

in Oct auction

I can understand your disappointment and this why you need to notify

the club and for the club to follow through to the seller who may not

be aware there is a doubt of purity regarding their stock

regarding NSWCS auctions

if you examined the fish on the night and noted they weren't a pair

then it is only a matter of notifying one of the committee at the desk

this is different to Jason's bag of yellow fry that are only now starting

to colour change

if they were entered as 2 fish or entered as a pair then that's what

they would have been put up for sale as

most times the auctioneer would try to vent them if they are labeled a pair

and if there was still doubt the auctioneer should note this

sexing fish in a bag under poor light and sometimes a not too clear

bag isn't always easy

to any that have attended the auctions you will know me as one of the

auctioneers and you will have noticed I will express opinion if I think

there is quality in the fish, any faults that are noted at book in on

the bag or that are obvious, I will try to sex the fish but if I can't

you will be advised, if the bagging or water appears to have a problem

to get it rebagged and to get through the sale of fish as quick as possible

to reduce bag time

unfortunately you can't reject a lot if the quality of colour is lacking but

there are lots rejected if they don't seem to correspond to the labeled species

however with the reduction of lots there has been a noticable reduction

of what could have been termed dumping and in my opinion improved quality

and range

I agree they are cross , I have a colony that I bought from Charlie wright before he got out of the hobby (Around 3 years ago) they are very good quality , compering to the photos they look nothing like them.

  • 3 weeks later...

Ok

I think I saw these same fish just 2 days ago at

City garden and aquarium

I told Stuart they are hybrid and he removed name from tank

So same guy has sold to shops with a name

If this continues we may have a big problem...

Stuart will sell only as display fish no name...

We need to find breeder and slow it down..
