smellfry
Hi, I've been looking for a sandy substrate for my tank but all the play sand and pool filter sand is of a dark tan yellow colour. I want to achieve a white -beige look so does anyone know where to get it around Epping or parramatta? Crushed coral is a bit expensive. Nigel
Have you tried bird cage sand its very fine but you can get it in a nice white or yellow colour. I used it in all my tanks.

smellfry
Are the marble chips very fine like sand? I recently bought some unicorn pool filter sand and the particles are a bit bigger compared to regular pool sand, however it is not the white colour I'm looking for. I'm considering adding a white substrate possibly marble chip on top of it
frankenstrat
i only asked for the larger stuff about 5-7mm, so im not sure how big there smallest stuff is, but they had tonnes of different colours and sizes
smellfry
What do marble chips actually look like? Does it resemble sand in any way?
frankenstrat
Not the ones I got, they look like smashes up marble random shapes and sizes around 5-7mm
smellfry
Isn't that more like gravel then?
smellfry
On second thoughts, I just put in then unicorn pool filter sand and it looks a lot whiter in the tank then outsides cos of the lighting and all, so I'm happy.
YAL05T
Chris put the sizes up in his post.....dust to 1.5mm is very sandlike. Google for pcs of it in tanks.
frankenstrat
yeah mine is more like gravel, its for a rhoadesii tank and they seem to like moving bigger pieces around to make breeding pits
FullyYellow
Does marble substrate buffer water?
YAL05T
Again, yes, yes it does buffer the water to a degree.
smellfry
Ok I've put in the sand. Tell me what you guys think. Also, how do I clean the sand since I can't really clearly see where the waste is collected? The water's still not clear yet cos the particles haven't all settled yet. frankenstrat
looks good, you can get a gravel vacuum, youll need a long one with how deep that tank is....most of them work quite well...
smellfry
The bottom right hand corner is also bare because the outlet pushes the sand away
frankenstrat
you could try putting more of the bigger rocks in that area to deflect the brunt of the water flow
frankenstrat
This is the gravel i got, labelled black crushed marble
smellfry
Oh I see. I think I prefer the look of sand . I've got a PVC pipe attached to the end of the siphon to reach the bottom. Haha. I was thinking of putting a rock in as well, I'll try it soon. Thanks
FullyYellow
The sand if you wash very thoroughly should be settled in the water. Therefore cleaning under tap water until it is clear not milky
